Most games make use of negative reinforcement to reward play: if you don't reach a target behaviour (like not dying) you get taken out of the game (either to respawn or otherwise). A good example of negative reinforcement at its finest are the Dark Souls games, where you are rewarded for outwitting an obstacle that killed you before with your previous experience+whatever it took to get back to that point.

Undertale uses positive reinforcement, you're encouraged to dispatch enemies with nonviolent means and basicslly rewarded with the game complimenting you for playing nice. It's a simple but subtle dynamic.

There's no politics, the game is about accepting other people. It's a pretty simple message. There's a pair of romantically involved female characters, but the game does not revolve around these two and it's portrayed awkwardly for comedic effect.

It's an inoffensive, endearing game that has some parallels to the Mother games, with a similarly upbeat eerie tone. As you may have gathered, I enjoyed undertale. It was just nice to play something different.

However, many of the fans are obviously children or maladjusted, horny nerds and they really shit the bed when it came to sharing the game with other people in a relate able way. LOTS of furfaggotry and creepy sexual characterization of under 18's.

The game itself doesn't, it just gives you the choice to do whatever the fuck you want and the world/characters react to this choice. Of course they won't be happy if you keep killing everyone but that's kinda part of the fun. The problem is the godawful fandom that took a simple but fun little game and turned it into some higher statement about their progressive utopia. Though you can partly blame the developer for attracting that kind of audience by putting lesbians into it and making the main character race and gender-ambigious .

I can assure you that it would've. The game was out at such a perfect time - made by the co-creator of Homestuck, Homestuck was reaching its ending - honestly, this game wouldn't of been successful without the existence of the unholy blob of a fandom that is Homestuck.

There's nothing wrong with the game.
The creator even refused to answer some dumbfuck of a journalists leading question about inclusivity and representation or some such bullshit.

The self-insert main character not having a canon gender means that the normal player assumes that they're their gender, and the Tumblrite uses this as a method to push their "nonbinary" meme.

The game itself is not bad. Good music, different gameplay. A lot of people complain that it pushes the non-violent bit to try to make a point, but some of the best content in the game is only accessible if you kill everyone.

"Evil" just means a somewhat arbitrary boundary where the end no longer justifies the means. Most people we think of as evil never realized they crossed that boundary.

And that's exactly why the concept of evil is laughably incompatible with this binary, option-selecting video game approach. The moment someone decided that they'd boil down complex morality, they did a disservice to video games as a form of expression. I've always preferred games that simply gave a choice between possible courses of action, and the results from those. You take the action that YOU consider the most appropriate to the situation, and you contemplate whether it's the right choice or not based on the morality of the situation itself, and not the game "ding"-ing up points against or in favour.

Of course, there should be some reaction. But that should be in context of the gameworld itself, so you can judge the morality of your actions and evaluate them, not in some menu ticking up points. And neither should it become immediately clear what was the "right" choice.

Fans tend to believe that Undertale, specificially its monsters, are based around Irish mythology.

From there, it's safe to assume that the game more or less takes place under Ireland. Now, the intro gives you a '201x' timeframe, meaning it takes place in the modern day.

There really isn't anything political about the game. Toby Fox wanted to make a unique game and focused on "outside the box" themes and he did a really good job with it.

If you ignore the whole fact that Tumblr is milking the game and ignore what they say for the most part, it's a really good, simple, elegant game.
