A ban will not be passed, as you would be violating our 2nd Amendment rights, which were not given to us by the government. The government is only charged with protecting those rights.
Furthermore, even if what you wanted was possible, you have not discussed the fact that the police have no responsibility to protect civilians, and there are no consequences for failing to do so, which was declared in 1855, and reaffirmed in 1981, making an exception ONLY for special cases, such as government custody, and reaffirmed AGAIN in 2005, stating that even a court-issued protective order does not entitle you to such protection.
The people are responsible for their own safety. If you take away the tools for that safety, then the government must become responsible for said safety, with harsh penalties for failure.

Especially dangerous and rare weapons can be regulated (not banned), but the 2nd Amendment means I have a right to arms that would be useful for the militia. A AR-15 seems to fit that bill perfectly.
Personally, I think 2nd amendment rifles should be longer range weapons as most people do not have the training to fight within 200 yards of someone. Battle rifles seem better suited for the people's militia. I recommend an AR-10 with an optic over an AR-15 for militia purposes.
