Probably because the one piece manga is much better and westerners don't read much manga. The anime adaption of Naruto is much more close quality to the manga and also over here was marketed as more 'adult' while one piece was on childrens morning cartoons and was censored at first.

The American dub was horrid

Honestly one piece is boring as fuck,the characters are not aesthetically pleasing and most of the times some characters are designed in such a weird way that it looks like the creator is taking the piss.
The worse things about this modern anime community is the circlejerk around gintama,jojo and one piece,which are all counter-culture/mainstream to Naruto.

A lot of people here likes DBZ and Naruto, One Piece is criticized for being so long.

DBZ and Naruto are not good series, also their releases are being forced and exploited for merchandise and shit. They're aren't meant for being that long, while One Piece has maintained everything you enjoy since chapter 1 and it just makes it better without the weird feeling of being watching something different (like DBZ).

One Piece is a masterpiece, it could have been really sucessful as a book.
