Both are great performances, just with different tones. James Earl Jones made it overly serious, despite the lines being written with humor in mind, while Denzel gives it the comedic rhythm that it seems it was meant to have. Both are entertaining though.

Both are good. I resonate with JEJ more because of what I see that reminds me of my own father. My dad was a guy that made a lot of jokes but when it came time to teach his sons a lesson the stakes were so high from his perspective. Dads aren't usually as suave as Denzel, they are driven by a very serious need to provide for their family. They only get mad because they know how little real control over life they have. The ultimate point of the scene is to impress without vocalizing that he loves his son.
