It's been more like 60. For most of it's history the USA was a sort of european backwater. It wasn't till the 50's that the America actually became an "empire"

Empires can last for varied amounts of time, but honestly the U.S. has only gained relevance since the first world war, truly reaching empire status after the second war and losing it already again when the Berlin wall fell due to its reliance on allies to make it relevance rather than it having actual power.
It's not a bad score and it certainly was an empire, but by now it's better to take a graceful exit from the mindset rather than remain stuck in permanent denial like i.e. the Brits.

But i'd consider an end to its empire to be a bit further back already, shortly after the fall of the Berlin wall and the disintegration of the Soviet Union.

I disagree. We started to become an empire the moment we declared independence and moved west. We conquered entire Indian tribes and nations, claimed their land for our own, colonized it, and established our culture and civilization in those lands. It's just that we were so successful at establishing our empire that we don't think of it as an empire. Nobody looks at Colorado or North Dakota as conquered land, but it factually is. We conquered and colonized it and incorporated it into our political regime.

Because the only empires the world has ever seen were doomed to fail from the beginning. The only empire that can ever last is a globalist one. The Empire of Earth.
