Did he have a problem or is playing the "team game" and letting Fuoco get some more points

Kinda sad that it's basically the end of Markelov's career, just one race and it's off doing, in the very best case scenario, WEC until SMP fucks off from it having spent all money, or just racing in random series in Russia.

>Stroll has like 2 private tests at the Abu Dhabi circuit >essentially endless laps on the track, testing out setups, understanding the track, tire wear etc >worst performance of the year in an already abysmal season >get annihilated by more than one second by a driver who passed his expiry date like 5-6 years ago and hasn't been top form in almost a decade
I really hope that this sets something of a reminder and incentive that even though a rich kid (billionaire rich) wins every junior formula, it means fuck all because they have such an unfair advantage. I really hope Lance Stroll continues his career in F1 for many more years, just to become solidified as the synonym of a paydriver. Sure he is a rookie but so is Vandoorne who was only a few tenths off ALONSO (refer to Alonso vs. Massa to understand the difference between the two). Plus when you're 20 races in to your F1 career you aren't exactly a fresh faced rookie anymore either. His performance is honestly just demonstrative of his legitimate skill overall as a driver. Let's not forget that Brazil wasn't much better overall either, neither was USA.
I can't really think of a worse debut season in F1, especially at such a "high" level (i.e. not in a backmarker) in a long time. Sure he got a podium, but Felipe would have maybe won that race if he hadn't gotten an engine failure. And yea Stroll got a front row start which you can't take away from him, but it's not exactly like Felipe is known as a wet weather specialist (see: Silverstone 2008 or any rain race in general).

>I can't really think of a worse debut season in F1 >And yea Stroll got a front row start Those two don't add up. And he is average.
Also IIRC VanDarkholme even beat Alonso a few times.
Ayden Morales
Junior careers can be indicative but in no way determining of F1 success.
Hulkenberg won EVERYTHING prior to F1 and he's.. alright. Perez has a pretty average junior record, and as teammates, with similar amounts of F1 experienced, they were probably the most closely matched teammates on the grid.
Kobayashi was pretty shit pre-F1 but was entertaining as fuck in F1, so. Stroll has a great junior record (boosted by money) and he is probably the worst driver on the grid.
The fact that Giovinazzi did what he did in GP2 in his first season against the "basically confirmed champion" Gasly is very impressive and I don't think Ferrari will forget that. He rose up to the challenge, actually had a great car for once and ended up taking the championship all the way to the end. Still quite bitter he didn't win it but still a great effort. Plus his wheel to wheel skills in that season were some of the best in the history of GP2 IMO, and the 2016 season had so many classic races.
Leclerc's performance is accentuated by the fact that he has a terrible teammate and Prema is arguably even stronger than last year.
Alexander Anderson

Jordan Hill

Jackson Rodriguez
So the fact that he got 1 good result on merit negates all the other terrible results? Heikki Kovalainen got a win in 2008 too, but that doesn't make him a great legendary driver.
My theory about Stroll's front row is that Monza suits Williams and Mercedes power unit anyway and Stroll was set up with more downforce than the more experienced drivers which made it easier to corner in the wet. Anyway it is still a good result but it is such a massive outlier in his record so far that it can't be taken as a clear demonstration of his skill.
Remember that this is in the context of Massa who has beaten a teammate like twice in his entire 2 decade career and was annihilated by Valtteri "Rubens Barrichello" Bottas both in quali and points in 2016

>My theory about Stroll's front row is that Monza suits Williams and Mercedes power unit anyway It does. But so does for rest of the Mercedes drivers like Bottas. And the other top drivers were Red Bull, Renault engine. So that's not really valid for wet weather. It was luck, sure. But you are conflicting with yourself. Also he's only 18, not everyone is Max tier talented out of the box. Give him a few years and he will be average. He will never be Ericson tier bad that's for sure.
Brandon Reed
While I agree with everything, it does feel like Hulk is, if not underappreciated, just plain unlucky. He's good enough to be a worthy rival to anyone in the top teams, but he just wasn't able to score a factory deal until it was too late and irrelevant and is also suffering from a worse variation of Heidfeld's curse.
At this rate his career in F1's effectively going to end in a very unremarkable way, unless a miracle happens with Renault, as the top teams have too many drivers in their own programs to pick from.
