I really don't understand how he became successful. Is it because of how innocuous and insipid he is? Or is it because he's "a nerd"? Or both?

I don't hate him or anything, but I only ever managed to sit through two full reviews and he seems genuinely uneducated when it comes to filmmaking - he offers zero to very little insight into both the technical and/or thematic side of the things he reviews. It's definitely not a "critic" and he lacks the humour or creativity to be an "entertainer", so what do people get from watching his content? From what I've seen most of his reviews boil down to "I liked X because I like X" and not much else.

I will say, however, that the most cringeworthy thing about him is his "book". Jesus, man, that's some pleb bullshit.
