Moby-Dick is a very difficult book for anyone to get through. It deals with a lot of religious themes that aren't even prominent in modern churches.

I read it and honestly, the best part is the description of the whaling process, as Melville actually shipped out on a whaler and there weren't many literate people around to actually commit details to paper.

Better example would be something like Clavell's Asian Saga... more approachable, middlebrow and full of themes that women would like but it's not 14-year old level so they can't grapple with it.
