No it isn't. Football is literally our national sport. Our shitty league gets higher attendance than our world class hockey league, not to mention that the Swedish football team has not only a muuuuch higher attendance than our hockey team, but they also demolish them in TV ratings. Only Northerners will act like hockey's anything but a distant second and that's because all they can play in that frozen snowed down hellhole /is/ hockey.

India/Pakistan's domination of field hockey slowly came to an end ever since artificial turf was made mandatory in international tournaments. Here only the poor folk from places like punjab and haryana play hockey and that too on local fields. They don't get to see an artificial turf until much later in their career.
Also India winning it's first World Cup in cricket was a final nail in Indian hockey.
