This. Obviously they weren't going to strictly follow the EU but why did they throw ALL of it out? They could have told an awesome story about Luke confronting the challenges of building the New Jedi Order while trying to avoid the mistakes of the Old with the help of force ghost Qui Gon, Yoda, Obi Wan, and Anakin. They could have actually showed that killing the Emperor and Vader didn't destroy the Empire. They could have used Thrawn. They could have used Mara Jade.
