Why the fuck were you working with 12M HCl? Undergrad labs should never be going above 1M and even then you should probably be diluting it.
I refuse to believe that anyone past undergrad would sniff anything in a lab (you'd waft it if you absolutely needed to smell it somehow).

I'm in my first year at universty and we used 12M HCl (37%) to acidify a solution.
The goal of the manipulation was to isolate a componant from a mixture, you make something go from an organic solution into a water based solution, and then acidify so it returns to its normal state (and then dry to get the componant pure)
