Nah, just Harry Potter, Madam Maxim, come to think of it, it's Maxim without the e

Whenever someone thinks Maxime Vachier-Lagrave is too long, he's commonly referred to as MVL.

Maxime is also a french word which is feminine "Une maxime" which is like an expression for an idea, in a philosophical way

Stop with this post. No one cares.

is someone young showing potential to challenge Magnus yet? Duda and Artemiev are new to me, I think the train has left for those already over 20... Is Wei Yi the one?

20 is still young. At the moment, you should look no further than the top places of the Junior World Championship, which was held recently.

chess-results.com/tnr305835.aspx?lan=1&art=1&rd=11&flag=30&wi=821

Special mention goes to 4th-placing Praggnanandhaa, who is only 12 and still has a chance of beating Karjakin's record as the younges GM of all time, if he gets another two GM norms very soon.

that name I recognize, but can't dare to pronounce or spell
Sure 20 is young, but a couple of years ago some of these 20-25 year olds looked like they might have the potential to rise above everybody else and even challenge Magnus, doesn't seem like it anymore.

Also, London Chess, is it just those St Louis people who commentate? It was a very comfy tournament when Trent, King and some others commentated, maybe they do on chess24 but you have to pay?

At the moment, it's really hard to say. I think you underestimate Carlsen and how hard it is to become World Champion and hold the top spot on the rating list for years and years. I have said countless times that it still remains to be seen whether Wei Yi is the next Carlsen or the next Radjabov (who, mind you, still reached 2793 and #4 in the world around five years ago, and remains an elite player). To find a real challenger to Carlsen, I would look to the players qualified for the Candidates. Aronian and Caruana are solid picks, and it could easily be argued that Aronian has been the best player of 2017, all things considered.

Seirawan is not so bad.

Aronian was the clear no.2 for a long while and Carlsens toughest opponent, I'm thinking about the time before Carlsen was WC and before the rematch with Anand. Even if Aronian is back in that place, surely he can't develop so much more at this stage? Sure a lot of players can reach around 2800, but is anyone showing potential yet to get up to 2850 and challenge Magnus for real, or will it be a case of Magnus getting older and losing it before anyone takes over the #1spot

Yasser is OK, even though his voice is too smooth, can't listen to the other two for hours though.

Traditional games go on the traditional games board.

My point is that potential is not a guarantee for greatness. If a young player shows potential, that's great, but getting to 2800 requires so much more than that. I have more faith in players already established in the absolute elite, and the field qualified for the Candidates is a good place to start. Caruana has been above 2850, live, and is younger than Carlsen. They have had some very interesting and exciting games going both ways, and a match between them could be great. Karjakin gave the defending champion a proper run for his money a year ago. Aronian has a sky-high peak level, and has outplayed Carlsen more times than anyone else, according to the latter. A look at the games they have played recently will confirm this. So and Ding are very strong players, but it is my belief that they struggle against Carlsen. Kramnik is a wildcard in more than one way. He might be the one player who understands the game better than Carlsen, and is certainly the only player in the field who has been World Champion before, but he has his bad days. He could give Carlsen a real challenge or go down in flames, depending on his form. That leaves Mamedyarov and Grischuk. I don't think they would do well in a match against Carlsen.

Sure a lot of players could potentially beat Carlsen in a 12 game match. I hope we get to see Aronian or Caruana try next.
Of course potential doesnt equal success, but to have success in challenging Carlsen in ELO I think you have to show something extra early, I don't think you can really bloom late, Carlsen is at least one step above everybody I know of today, and if anyone will ever challenge him it must be someone who isn't close to his peak yet. Maybe praganandanda then yeah

It isn't quite that easy. Karjakin was considered as promising as Carlsen, if not more, but his progress stalled earlier. Aronian was a late bloomer, and look where he is now. Vachier-Lagrave was always good, but spent a lot of time and effort on a degree. Once he graduated, he soon rose to the absolute elite. They key is not showing something special, which all the elite players have done, but being able to perform consistently over time. MVL of summer 2016, So of fall and early winter 2016/2017 and Aronian of this year could all match Carlsen or more, but they lack Carlsen's relatively high performance floor level and staying power.

maybe you're right, and someone like Caruana can start to climb above him a bit out of nowhere. would be a bit refreshing even if Carlsen is my boy.

He's been world#1 for what, close to 10 years now? And the madman was close to 100 ELO above the next at one point? it's ridiculous to actually improve the gap to the rest of the world. now it has closed a bit, but Aronian was over 2800 5 years ago as well...
I think consistency comes with class. As you say, someone like Kramnik is close to Carlsens class and understanding, but he's been old for a while now and can't be as consistent due to age.

Carlsen first became #1 in January 2010, immediately after his +6=4-0 performance against world-class opposition in Nanjing. Anand took the #1 spot back for a few months in 2010 and 2011, when Carlsen, Anand, Kramnik and Aronian were fairly equal in rating and strength. It was in the second half of 2012 that Carlsen left the rest of the players behind, and I think his biggest lead at any point was around 70 points, which may or may not be "close to 100", depending on your definition.

thought it was a bit earlier desu.
70 gap is a bit ridiculous. How large was it for Kasparov at the most?

...

82, in 2000. When Kasparov achieved his peak rating of 2851, Anand was #2 at 2769. Carlsen's highest gap was 74 in 2013, when he was 2870 and Kramnik was rated 2796. The highest difference between #1 and #2 was Fischer and Spassky immediately before their match in 1972, when Fischer was 2785 and Spassky 2660 for a difference of 125 points.

who the fuck is this rodshtein russian and how did he pass our other based chess playing russian

Reminder that chess is not a real sport and Carlsen is a massive autist.
