We don't exactly know for sure, but if they just kept adding lines to make bigger numbers, it wouldn't be convenient. Imagine writing a hundred strokes just to make the character for hundred, instead of just writing 百. Again, these characters were made thousands of years ago so it's impossible to know for sure.

If you're industrious and seek to experience another whole new culture, go for it. But if your easy life meant ESL teaching and for easy fuck than you won't enjoy China as much (China isn't the same as it is ten years ago). Anyway I highly recommended you to learn some basic Chinese first, being able to communicate with them will give a better impression for you to the Chinese.
Find a good passage with enough phrases you don't know like a Chinese newspaper. Find the meaning and pronunciation of the words, then copy it out. Practice until you can write all the words on demand.
