Money. They are butthurt that, since they are a rich region like Madrid, Navarra or the Balearic Islands, their tax money is used to fund poorer regions. They really don't understand that this is the case in every country in the world, and that if Catalonia wins independence, Barcelona will pay for the rest of the country. For some, it's not even money, it's... feelings. Literally. They will tell you that they "feel Catalan, not Spanish", such that they deserve a new country that is recognised by the international community.
We're not butthurt about the Spanish nation, we're butthurt about the Spanish MONARCHY. The red - yellow - red flag represents the Spanish kingdom. We consider the Republican flag the only legitimate Spanish flag, because a monarchy is illegitimate by definition.
