>not disagreeing but

Tommy
The Blues Bothers
Oliver!

LSOH has absolute shit lyrics, friendo.

Bullshit. Alright, it's maybe not the cleverest, but songs like Skid Row and Suddenly Seymour are fucking great.

Singing in the Rain
The Young Girls of Rochefort, or whatever the English title is
unironically the South Park movie

I just watched Chicago for the first time the other day and damn it's a lot better than I thought it would be.

This song is great: youtube.com/watch?v=SBM82Ju2kJU

bitch please

>tfw I've wanted to see this for years but never had the chance

Some day. I did get to see Les Miserables on Broadway at least.

I've wanted to see it for ages. Both that and Matilda.

I saw Matilda in New York too, it was pretty good, though the girl plaing Matilda had the WORST English accent. I'm English though so that might be why I noticed it.

The best thing about Matilda was the staging. It was really clever how they did everything.

>I know Seymour's the greatest
>but I'm dating a semi-sadist

fuck you you fucking fuck they're fucking fantastic.

Honk! > all

Titanic the Musical (score on youtube)
Shrek the Musical (for real, on netflix if you're so inclined)
Obligatory Les Miserables

I like the story and some of the writing, but LSOH has some awful songs.

But the best musical is Waitress or

Jesus Christ Superstar is the ultimate musical, and anyone who says otherwise can fuck right off.

Les Miserables is also very good.

that's actually getting a new production soon. I love Stiles and Drewe but they keep making shows for kids. It'd be nice if they made something mature for once.

You're right, I forgot about JCS.

>ywn see your theaterfu in the lead role again
fuuuck

youtube.com/watch?v=q9pFS1zRxmI

you can find it online I think, its one of the earlier shows and a few of the new cast later. I wanted to see it to but my friends thought going to see a musical was gay

This song makes me feel bad every time: youtube.com/watch?v=YIvpOIUqKKA

As long as no one in this thread says Repo! then we're ok.

hair
youtube.com/watch?v=fhNrqc6yvTU

post great numbers

youtube.com/watch?v=4xTpqFlNJlc

I just feel like if I'm going to see it I'd rather see it properly on stage. It was the same with Les Mis, if I'm going to see it I want to see it properly.

I tend to enjoy things more if I see them on stage anyway. I saw Fiddler on the Roof (for free) the other day and enjoyed it a lot, but I know I wouldn't have liked it if I hadn't seen it live.

Step aside plebs.

Unironically yes, but also Jesus Christ Superstar and Fiddler on the Roof.

Say what you will about jews, but they can put on a good showtune.

This.

BASED

no

Fuck how could I forget about Fiddler? What a musical, every single number is a master piece

I'm not going to say best ever, but Avenue Q is well worth the ticket price if you ever get the chance to see it.

It's more than just "The Internet Is For Porn." There's even a little genuine heart to it, which I think I lot of comedies end up forgetting.

This is the only good song from it: youtube.com/watch?v=10tee6Eff34

>tfw I really like musicals and eurovision

I-I'm not a homo, honest

Trips confirm, Alan Menken and Howard Ashman should never have gotten a job at Disney.

Team America: World Police

It's definitely the best song but I think most of them are catchy enough.

Musicals are made by queers for queers

ugh. please go listen to the original show you underage philistine. It should've won the Pulitzer.

RHPS is probably my favorite.
Frank is just too good.

stay mad :)

youtube.com/watch?v=Tpv1kE1QXhw

youtube.com/watch?v=tkplPbd2f60

This remains campkino

How was the remake?

I meant the film. Obviously the stage show is great.

"the only good song" from the film? they're the same songs.

Nope.

No Place Like London is completely different on stage to the film.

funnily enough, a huge part of why I got into musicals in the first place growing up was all the rare waifus. there's so many. it's absurd.

youtube.com/watch?v=zSGWoXDFM64

Fuck you I know it's operetta

rocky horror picture show! lol :3

That song sucks, the original RHPS sucks, and the remake sucked even more. I was hoping in the year 2017 we as a people could finally stop pretending that RHPS was good.

your asshole sucks

Even if you don't like it you have to acknowledge how influential it was.

And the Black Plague was influential to European history, what's your point?

Thanks for proving my point, pinches maricones

Sucks dicks in like a Hoober.

>straight people are gay
nice logic you got there, friendo.

I wish I could sing. I love acting when I can, but I just can't sing.

...

I'd give my left buttock to vibrato. I don't even know how people do it.

Okay give me some clarification mother fuckers.

Are we talking about movie adaptations of musicals or musicals in general?

If it's movie adaptations then yeah, Little Shop of Horrors (or maybe Chicago) but ONLY THE DIRECTORS CUT with the proper ending, fuck that happy ending bullshit.

Original 1970 JCS album with a cast full of British rockstars screaming their heads off is the absolute GOAT

This is TV and Film, stage shows can fuck off to some other board.

How is it that over a hundred years later Gilbert and Sullivan still come across as relevant and modern?

youtube.com/watch?v=OpVbBH9Ip8I

I really didn't enjoy the movie, but the music is fucking great, so you can eat shit.

Bat Out of Hell is GOAT, everything else is trash.

Jesus Christ is best kinomusical.
Tanz der Vampire is the best musical that'll never get a kino.

American Psycho

Alice Cooper doing King Herod has always been a favourite of mine.

Sondheim hates them and is against everything they stand for. He wrote "Please, Hello!" in Pacific Overtures as a kind of jab at them.

Yeah, well, Sondheim is a hack.

What do G&S "stand for" anyway?

Kind of a strange complaint, the lyrics are a little schlocky, I'd say appropriately so, but there's nothing really terrible in there.

Nope, they're absolutely terrible lyrics and your pooh-poohing of that user's complaint doesn't make them better.

Little Shop is a musical for kids.

>Pulitzer prize winner who wrote lyrics for West Side Story and modernized the form
>a hack

yikes.

Moulin Rouge

I genuinely don't see what is bad about the lyrics m8. You seem to have a massive thing against them but I just don't understand why.

>What do G&S "stand for"
I thought you mean the initials at first lol.

they crammed unnatural language into fast time signatures in order to create their famed patter songs, which Sondheim argues is a horrible and fraudulent methodology for writing musical songs.

He probably also hated that they only created light operettas that didn't move the art form forward in humanistic way. he basically thinks THEY'RE hacks.

you can watch this for a primer on what Sondheim thought of G&S and how Please, Hello is an answer to that:

youtube.com/watch?v=8rp6CWcs2j8

>Unnatural language

Not really though, not for the time. Everything in English theatre was like that, as the entire industry was up its own arse. That combined with the fact that it's operetta means that it was always about fitting weird words around a tune and not the other way around.

It sounds like he's getting annoyed about the fact it's structured more like opera.

>I thought you mean the initials at first lol.
Jesus Christ, you're an idiot.

The book for West Side Story is deeply terrible, even it's biggest fans would admit this. And practically every Jew in New York has a Pulitzer.

I don't think he's a hack, but his work hasn't aged well.

>Yanks fail to understand British banter, even on stage

It's embarrassing really.

Jesus Christ, super nah

Hamilton is brilliant. Its so good it makes me forget its a liberal propaganda fest.

he didn't write the book, just the lyrics. the lyrics are what didn't age well, but it was his first big show and he was like 26 or something absurd so you can hardly call them a failure.

And all the best and most memorable lines came directly from him too, so it goes both ways.

why is his neck like that

>tfw Tim Curry is in a wheelchair now because of his stroke and can barely speak

His death is gonna hit hard

I'm going home

Better wait a minute
Better hold your phone

You're trying to make this sound like a meme but it's a legitimate viewpoint, it's a cult film for a reason

Hamilton is trash.
1776 is true revolutionary war musikino

A lot of theater/musical singers are not good singers in a technical sense, they just have a distinctive sound and know how to have fun

Has anyone seen the billy elliot musical?

Wow, FANTASTIC lyrics.

>voluntarily hating fun
jesus christ, super nah.

The only songs I liked from it were:

>Burn
>You'll Be Back
>maybe the Room Where it Happens I guess, it's kind of catchy

What was making European characters black and ignoring the contributions of actual blacks in the Revolution supposed to accomplish other than triggering whitey?

Dreamworks prince of egypt.

It's a shame the Broadway version butchered all the best songs.

The first musical numbers play out pretty conventionally but I love how inventive they get by the time it gets to They Both Reached For the Gun

and Razzle Dazzle was amazing of course

how do you still not get the central theme of it highlighting that America was built by immigrants. Like, that's 1/3rd of the entire thing.

Who THE FUCK cares about immigrants? Every American thinks immigrants are awesome.

Legal immigrants, that is.

> ctrl f
> 'seven brides for seven brothers'

Sup Forums sure has shit taste. the best musicals were made before 1965.

youtube.com/watch?v=TygmMPbwfjA

evidently not the guy who shot that Garmin technician after asking to see his papers. or any person who shouts "get out of my country" to random brown people walking down the street.

>What was making European characters black and ignoring the contributions of actual blacks in the Revolution supposed to accomplish other than triggering whitey?
DUDE AMERICA WAS MADE BY MINORITIES AND IMMIGRANTS LMAO
that's truly just it.
It's a stupid musical that deserves nowhere near the amount of praise it has gotten let alone the amount of cash.
Lin manuel miranda is a fucking hack who can write the same couple of songs and nothing else.
I hope it dies off soon.
