The lasso is just a rope with a special knot that lets you loop the rope around things and pull it tight. It's kind of like a noose or bowline. It's just a rope tied in a certain way. No handle, no taper.

You can't whip things with a normal rope. at least not without swinging it a lot harder than you do a whip. A whip is designed so the tip can go super sonic. That's the crack you hear when you whip the air. It's a lot harder to do with a plain rope because of the weight and the shape.
