Today marks the first double session of the Worlds, and this evening sees two-time champion Gary Anderson commence his quest for title #3.
The afternoon session begins with a preliminary clash with Croatian unknown Alan Ljubic facing Ulster bore Brendan Dolan, whose 2017 has been so bad he only made it here via the PDPA qualifier. The First Round resumes with two wildly inconsistent players in tall Dutch lad Benito van de Pas and Scumbag Brother Steve West; Big Ben has been poor in 2017 and Simply's season petered out big time following his implosion at the World Grand Prix. Next up are excuse-o-matic Mervyn King and Austrian #3 Zoran Lerchbacher; King's year has been even worse than those two as he didn't even make it past the last 16 of a major, but with Hypercane's far inferior stage experience, even this shouldn't be that difficult a match for Merv. Scotland's #3 Robert Thornton closes the afternoon against the prelim winner, and like everyone else in this session, has been rubbish; don't be surprised to see him lose to Dolan to piss everyone off.
The evening kicks off with a rather interesting prelim game between Canada's 2016 Lakeside runner-up Jeff Smith and Development Tour winner Luke Humphries. The Silencer returns to the PDC stage after a spell in the BDO where he captured the hearts of many with his amicable attitude, but Humphries is no pushover. It's then a full house of Js beginning with eternal "future World Champion" Joe Cullen against quickfire Jermaine Wattimena. The Rockstar has been much better over the past 12 months but the Machine Gun's pace could unsettle the ex-postie. A Dutch derby follows as Jelle Klaasen takes on Jan Dekker; the Cobra and Double Dekker are polar opposites in terms of speed, scoring and finishing, so this is a real toss-up. Closing the day are Gando and the prelim winner, and if Smith gets here, it could be a very close game indeed.
Coverage starts at 12:30pm UK time on Sky Sports Darts (SS Arena).
Prelims are best of 3 sets, first round best of 5 sets; first to 3 legs in a set.
