They still are technologically more advanced than the US. That they didn't take over the top spot is simply due to demography and the fact that extrapolating a bubble economy always leads to silly conclusions.
No idea, all I know is Japan has tons of illegal immigrants from the rest of Asia. A lot of nativists hate it and that's where you see the rising nationalists coming from. THIS I agree, it's a very different discussion what kind of migration Japan needs, there's a point to be made it would benefit more from trying to brain drain other countries than the classical model of low skilled migration, but the point stands it's got an aging population overburdening what remains of their youth.
The US has been using both legal and illegal migration to boost itself artificially, allowing for it to sustain economic activity and growth it could not have otherwise, and to some extent I suspect this is deep down the reason Western European elites have accepted migration facing similar demographic challenges.
Japan aged and had no plan to deal with that, automation cannot make up for missing consumers and taxpayers.
