Why do Poles and Germans love Gothic so much? Not that I'm complaining mind you 1 and 2 are god tier games.
Liam Hughes
Germans are obvious, it's a German game and a good one.
It's popularity in Poland is most likely due to a very well done dubbing and localisation in general. It's great even by today's standards. It's a fucking good game, it was extremely easy to pirate. If you had a mood for gothic in the early 2000s you just gave a shout to your class and someone brought you a ripped DVD with it.
And the modding community. Gothic 1 in Poland had a very extensive mod called "Mroczne Tajemnice" (dark secrets or whatever), made by a polish modding group, then there was the conversion mod called Payback Time (Czas Zapłaty) which was even more ambitious - it had it's own soundtrack youtu.be/ZC1MFjK9GKU
As far as Gothic 2 goes there wasn't much going on because Russians took great care of it with The Returning and L'Hiver rebalance mod (great shit right there). But some group really got their shit together and there will be a new Polish mod for Gothic 2 focused on lore of the world of gothic youtu.be/9F3_k5cBDq0 Now we're talking about a small group of modders that actually got the original voice actors from the polish version of the game from 15 years ago to dub their fucking mod. Just how cool is that.
And most important - Gothic ran on a toaster which was crucial in the early 2000.
