Moana was probably a big hit all over Polynesia, because it contained a lot of imagery and folklore that islanders were raised on and intimately understand. Having vacationed in Hawaii, I am aware of some of it, and was able to imagine, from my limited experience, how much my Hawaiian friends must appreciate the many cultural and historic references in the film. I'm betting a lot of them consider it a favorite movie, as well as a work of art. I'm pretty sure, though, that a lot of it went way over the heads of people who don't know any islanders, or have have never been to Polynesia.

1. Boring characters. Both of them look disgusting. Moana look generic at best.

I knew next to nothing about the Polynesian peoples so it caught my curiosity the same way Shaka Zulu and Apocalypto did before.
I knew it would warm my cold dead heart for an hour or so as pretty much every other Disney assembly-line movie has before.
