Athlete politicians

Who are some notable pro athletes who succeeded in politics?
Pic related George Weah, 1995 Ballon d'Or and newly elected president of Liberia.

People who only went as far as ministry of sports need not apply.

I believe both Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford both played college football.

Based Cuau working the left wing faggots into a ding dong dilly shoot

donald trump was a great amateur boxer

>amateur
Might as well say Prince Albert.

>electing a footballer as your head of state
and people wonder why africa still is this giant shithole

yeah, because George Weah recently becoming the president of Liberia is the reason that Africa is a shithole

Bill Bradley (NBA) was a Senator

Jim Bunning (MLB) as well

Jack Kemp was in Congress and ran for VP with Bob Dole

are you just taking the shit or are you really this retarded?

are you actually offended that I didn't agree with your little meme comment?

Romario is a senator for Rio

Manny Pacquiao is a 4th grade dropout who gets punched in the face for a living and he is going to be President of The Philippines.

Did he get the "dollar Bill" nickname as a NBA player or a senator? This nickname always puzzled me beyond the play on words.

Bruh, Weah was running against the vice president of the previous regime (when Liberia was shit as usual) and has been a poltician for at least 15 years. It's either him or another corrupt politician.

Step aside, children

Vitali Klitschko is currently the Mayor of Kiev
Alexis Arguello was the mayor of Managua, Nicaragua iirc.
I also think Juan Manuel Marquez is involved in politics in Mexico.

Liberia has gone from a president who was educated at Harvard to Weah, who has a degree from Devry (online diploma mill)
KEK

Alan Page is a famous Minnesota Viking who was elected to the Minnesota State Supreme Court

There's more bravery and courage in working for free than there is in getting paid to play a game you love.

Would you rather have unpaid politicians who do it for the love of legislating, or fat cat politicians making money off the public dime?

Is he any good at it? I have no idea who he is off the field.

...

he was just cheap

Worst governor we ever had.

Not the point, I'm looking for people who lived their lives geared towards sports for 30+ years, which makes them unlikely politicians, amateur sport is just part of the life of a Renaissance man.

Not sure since I’m not from Rio, but based off of our politicians all being human garbage and cariocas even worse I’d say he’s probably bad

Do you think he will be the 46th?

most seahawk fans nowadays don't know him becuase they are bandwagon shits, but this guy was a hall of fame wide receiver and, after retirement, a congressman
pretty much the embodiment of american dream

Joachim B. Olsen won silver in shot put at the 2004 Olympic Games and is now a member of the Danish parliament.

Brian Holm was a professional bike rider and current sporting director for Quickstep and has just been reelected to Frederiksberg’s city council.

Oh and I forgot the most important one. Ulrik Wilbek was one of the greatest handball coaches of all time and this November he became mayor of Viborg.

Antti Kalliomäki, an Olympic medalist in pole vault, an MP and a minister in two cabinets. Notably chose the social democrats, when athletes-turned-politicans usually tend to gravitate towards the right wing.

Well, even Charles Taylor had a more credible academic background than Weah and look how that turned out for Liberia.

Weah was great in FIFA 98.

There was an NBA player that became a Senator, Bill Bradley

Guardiola in 10 years will be the president of independent Catalonia.

Weah was literally PES 2004 Adriano tier in Fifa 96 on genesis/megadrive

Go to bed Carles.

Jesse Ventura was elected Governor as a third party candidate in Minnesota. He was generally well received although unusual.

Former Minnesota Governor and U.S. Senator Wendell Anderson has a silver medal in Olympic Ice Hockey

Purple People Eater member Alan Page was elected to the MN State Supreme Court. Another interesting fact is that despite being a defensive lineman he ran around 30 miles a week during the season. This frequently made him underweight.

Charles Barkley will be governor of Alabama one day.

>you now remember RT and Congressman Jon Runyan

Would be an improvement over the current guy, t.b.h.

What would happen if an African player won the Ballon d'Or today?

An uncle Tom like Barkley will never be our governor

So this is the power of democracy...

nothing probably? what do you expect to happen?

Six time baseball All Star, Maggilo Ordonez, is the mayor of the Venezuelan city of Sotillo (population about 250,000). He won election despite never having voted in the city (he is from Caracas).

Ordonez was a vocal ally of Chavez, and now Maduro and the rest of the sitting Venezuelan Socialist Party. He is perhaps the last Venezuelan star athlete to publicly support those in power in Venezuela.

He is unpopular among his constituents who blame him for neglecting city sanitation and infrastructure, and also accuse him of spending too much time in the United States (reportedly several months at a time). Notably, despite his constant traveling, he has never requested the necessary travel permits from the Venezuelan government.

Suffice to say he seems to be living lavishly while he and his political party is running his country right into the shitter

I hope not for them. Even by NBA standards he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, he's just opinionated.

Probably outrage because none of them are good enough to deserve it. Prime Drogba was probably the last viable candidate they had.

Quite literally. It's the first time there will be a democratic transition in Liberia, and the first time a member of the Liberian "native" majority demographic (as opposed to descendants of American freemen) will be president. Will probably be a fucking mess but it's not like Liberia can fall much lower than it was in the last 15 years. It's very much the asshole of the Earth, main competition being its neighbour Sierra Leone.

Back in the period they played in college sports were considered the top level of athletics.Professional sports in the US were largely a joke outside of Baseball until around the 1970s

Lynn Swann (NFL) had a position as a Republican politician for a while

paul accola

I said succesful politicians.
