If you live in a major US city you can get internet on par with that in Japan. Consider the fact that half of Japan lives in the Tokyo metro area. Now consider that most of America lives in the middle of fucking nowhere.

Because the internet up until recently in america, was completely unregulated. Telecoms could charge a fortune for shitty networks and never upgrade their networks with all that cash. Telecoms in the US are designed to make senior executives obscenely wealthy.

A stable 50 mbps connection is more than fine for 90% of people. You don't need Google fiber to shitpost on Sup Forums and check Facebook.

if you get a gazillion gigabits, that's from you to the city centre. They often cannot backup international peering with these speeds, so international stuff is slow while your connection isn't used.

Let's put it in perspective, I live in a rural area and it's not even PLANNED for the nearest big cities. New York, Philly, Pittsburgh, Boston, etc.... and it's been 5 years

so, the run-of-the-mill might not be as great as it seems.
