Mexican-Americans are a group of almost 40 million people, the vast majority of which were born in the US to other Mexican-American parents over generations and have really distant family members that will never meet. Hell I have some really distant family members in Spain, Venezuela and Argentina, and it means absolutely nothing. You are thinking of the recent ones, which are around 11 million. The only difference with Italians is that Mexican wave of immigration is much more recent, but they will suffer the same fate, as it is already happening with the Mexican-Americans who have been in the US for the longest time.
