Because once Queen Margherita di Savoia (Savoia were the kings of Italy) visited Naples and a pizzaiolo (the dude who make pizzas) decided to dedicate this new pizza to her.
Before that event pizzas were made only with tomato, garlic, origanum and oil.

No american every complained about pizza being greasy, except for those times when a triple meat lovers with extra cheese has that puddle that runs out onto your lap.
But seriously, the best pizza I've had lately had very thin pepperoni slices that curled up all around the edge, so that the edges were crispy while the center had a bit of oil keeping it chewy. Tasted 1000x better than thick pepperoni that lays flat.
