LAKESHIRE • A former Affton High School football standout forced his way into a South County home and was shot and killed by an off-duty officer inside after a Facebook dispute over Black Lives Matter apparently boiled over late Saturday afternoon.
Gebhard threw a 50-pound concrete planter through the window and entered the Lakeshire residence as the officer's wife, mother-in-law and two young children struggled to escape through a bedroom window, St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said. The off-duty officer shot and killed Gebhard.

There's a distinction between someone being a violent criminal in general (someone who has a criminal record or is known to be frequently violent) and someone suddenly snapping, perhaps due to an unmedicated mental illness, and committing a one-time violent crime.
I'm not defending the black dude. You break into someone's house with violent intent and its fair game to shoot you. I'm defending the article from the implicit suggestion that they're trying to "make him look better than he is".
If some white nerd was in his school's chess club, got straight As, was on the swim team, and then one day beat his girlfriend to death with a golf club, it'd be relevant to the story that he was taking anti-psychotic meds, that his teachers thought he was a great student, and that all his friends thought he was the nicest dude ever. And I think it'd be strange for people to object to those inclusions in the article on the basis that, "he was obviously a violent criminal."
Nothing in that article attempts to justify his actions. It's not a puff piece. The story itself tells you everything you need to know to figure out that his death was justified.
