For example, rape comes from latin raptus which could be voluntarium (consented) or violentum (by force). In roman law was when someone kidnapped a woman (it had to be an "honest" woman) to have sex with her.
In portuguese the word for rape is estupro which comes from stuprum, which was actually any sexual act against moral standards, including bestiality and pederasty. When the perpetrator forced someone else to do it, it was considered stuprum violentum, which is what we consider rape today.
I don't know american law very well, but from what I know rape is the introduction of benis in bagina or anus, anything else is sexual assault.
