1st, all you had to do was go to college. The college deferment kept a LOT of guys out of the war.
2nd, if you ended up with a bad draft number (it depended on your birthday), you simply volunteered for a branch like the Navy or Air Force or joined the Nat'l Guard. My brothers and older cousins did that.
The war sucked and should have never been fought, but 'Nam wasn't the meat grinder most younger people believe it to be. During the year with the most KIAs, military aged men still had a better chance of dying in a car wreck.
