But it wasnt a myth, it was confirmed it was used on several occasions.
Fun fact: The coup goverment in greece used it on their torture island on communists or suspected communists imprisoned there. A survivor tells that he would be thankful that the guards would come every six hours to beat him to near death just because of all the beating he would move just a few inches to the left or right, and the drop torture would start over on another spot of his forehead instead of going on. So I think ~6 hours is the breaking point.
