Does anyone else think Mystic Force has been one of the dullest Power Rangers shows in the history of Power Rangers? Each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Australia as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Disney vetoed the idea of just dubbing Sentai; they made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for their teen musicians. The Mystic Force series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the theme song was terrible. As I watched, I noticed that every time a character was trying to undergo development, the author wrote instead that it was just "the power of the phoenix"

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Disney's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that they have no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Mystic Force by the same Linkara. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are watching Mystic Force at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to watch Linkara." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you watch "Mystic Force" you are, in fact, trained to watch Linkara.

And the performance was really good, the costume was as expressive as it could/needed to be and the voice always managed to keep his authoritative tone with a lot of emotion.

They were clearly trying to sell to a much different demographic. SPD was too focused on early-teens boys with is constant explosions, gin fights, and Judge Dredd Doggo. So they went for a more catch-all tone for next season.
