I realized the pilot script I wrote was heavily influenced by a video game, I didn't purposely copy it, but there are many similarities, what should I do?

Kill yourself? I'm in the same position, I accidentally rewrote Wreck-It Ralph.

There are big differences in my screenplay, but I feel people will still try and connect the dots and find it distracting.

You're probably right.
What video game, by the way?

Nah, I ain't falling for that

falling for what

What camera would you folks recommend for someone with a budget of around 2k currently?

Blackmagic Ursa mini

Been note taking a lot. I tend to think of a lot of shit and put pen to paper and carry a notebook with me lots, noting down random shit i like.

Plan on starting my female Warriors like script next month. And plan on going back to my satanist cabin horror script and make some heavy changes; first draft was horrid in hindsight.

>Plan on starting my female Warriors like script next month.
Is it a porno?

Or Blackmagic in general. Anything with an EF mount would be smart, cause then you can use diff cameras with the same mounts such as a Canon t5i or a Nikon D5300

I know the Blackmagic Pocket/Cinema camera is around 2 grand. Lens can range from $500-$3000. Depends on what you want. If you got a local camera rental shop, I rec that. I'm sure you could also rent a camera from them if you want to save dough. Just make sure you got a tight shooting schedule to save money.

Oh for sure.

Nah, I don't think I could do something like that. Though I heard from a friend of a friend that work in the business that he makes rad money in the business. Sex sells I guess.

It's more of an action-horror. Female gang is on the run from a pissed off male gang. They need to get from A to B, safely. Bad guys get in the way. Violence happens. Lots of 80s inspired shit in too, colours and sounds/music wise.

Hope it's better than the actual Warriors.

It's a good movie. Aged slightly, but it still works.

No need for a remake either. Just a diff version, highly influenced by it.

welcome back

thanks, bud.

I got halfway through a gangster script last year before giving up because I thought it was shit. Just started reading it again and realizing there's actual potential here and it seems worth finishing, just gotta dig up my old plot outline. It's basically Goodfellas/Casino by way of Rashomon, if anybody's curious.

Goodfellas is shit, but the Rashomon with gangsters thing is kind of interesting.
Italian and Irish gangs are so boring.

Sounds like shit to be honest with you.
>Violence happens. Lots of 80s inspired shit in too, colours and sounds/music wise.
If nostalgia is going to be what you're going for, you must not end up in exploitative territory, because that's what you're doing if you are just using nostalgia as a cover for bad film making.

Agree, gangster movies have been in morally ambiguous territory for too long. It's old and stale, if your going to make a gangster movie, you need to have morals.

>gangster movies have been in morally ambiguous territory for too long

what did he mean by this?

When you say morals, do you mean your characters must be moral, or there must be underlying morals in the narrative?

Bioshock

lol who's ever played Bioshock

bump

You could do either, but you could have immoral characters, with an underlying morality.

I meant exactly what I stated, one of Scorsese's flaws is that he doesn't present it as such. He glorifies degenerates.

Scorsese just isn't good.

Haven't been in this kind of thread before what do we do here

Taxi Driver is good.

Taxi Driver is an outlier.

Raging Bull and King of Comedy may be outliers too, I haven't got to them yet.

Talk about our movie ideas, share our frustrations, share our writing, get feedback, share helpful links.

Mostly feedback though.

Raging Bull is good, haven't seen King of Comedy though. Sadly he went down hill pretty fast.

Hey anons, I'd like to try my hand writing a screenplay, but I really don't think I have the life experience or the knowledge. So I'll read more books, watch movies, live a little longer, etc. but what do you think about a movie about a German who is kidnapped by the Soviets, and forced to work in a labor camp after the war? The story would follow him as he escaped and made his way back to his German village and family after years in captivity. To my knowledge there aren't that many movies about this from the German perspective, despite it being a fairly common occurrence for German guys to just show up to there town after being gone for a couple years.

That sounds boring so I'm sure it'll be fantastic.
The fact that you're not building the story around an interesting/exciting premise leads me to believe the intrigue will lie within the details, characters, and execution.

...

desu I've got no idea beyond the basic story, which means I need to wait so that the "intrigue will lie within the details, characters, and execution."

Like one of those smart European movies, where the characters philosophize with each other and such, maybe have him meet an Orthodox priest on a train he's hopping or something, which I imagine is how a lot of people got back. I don't want to be pretentious though, and camera creativity is a must.

I kind of want a Sony F3, family.

Bump. These threads tend to be good

Bump

>no car
>no money
no kino

I'm a pleb so I haven't seen many movies before 2000 or such. Can anyone tell me if my idea is a rehash/has been in a movie before?

>movie about a character with multiple personalities
>played by three different actors that, on-screen, change periodically (appearing as the main character) as each personality takes over
>more than one personality can be on-screen during dialogue between the two
>the side characters obviously know who the "real" character is by looking at them yet doesn't reveal to audience
>no identifying adjectives (i.e. "he", "she", etc.) is said by side characters/is very ambiguous
>by the end of the movie, still a mystery as to which personality was the real human and which ones were figments of his/her imagination

I'm sure you can do it, user, I believe in you.

I was getting a lot of help in the first thread, but it died in the middle of a conversation, everybody had fell asleep.

Don't know if it's been done before, but it sounds good.
Not really a premise though.

I think this is a pretty interesting perspective. Go for it.

Scorsese does a good job presenting the allure of the criminal lifestyle, which is a necessary part of the "crime doesn't pay" because in order to give half a shit about the characters you have to kind of understand why they'd get involved in that lifestyle. Goodfellas certainly leaned on this for entertainment value, but at the end of the day it was a solid "crime doesn't pay" story in the vein of the old Cagney pictures.

Sometime some one gets a general going but honestly that's the best way to keep it alive. Get a OP with resources. And a few links to YouTube channels like DSLR GUIDE, Rocket Jump, or Film Riot and maybe some PDFs to script writing books. Links to Contests or amazon studios

/p/ has a video sticky with resources on cameras.

The general shouldn't be banned for making threads like this since its obviously Sup Forums related just need to meme it hard enough and eventually we'll be able to have threads.

There was a horror movie that did this, but it was all in a psychos head, don't remember what it was called, but it's a fairly recent film and it had John Cusack and a little girl staying at a motel, with several other characters as they get killed off.

There's also a Brian De Palma film called Raising Cain which handles a psycho with multiple personalities, although it's all John Lithgow. pic related is the "cool psycho". Both of Brian De Palma's movie "Sisters" and "Dressed to Kill" also handle similar psycho multiple personality themes and you should watch his filmography for ideas. The new movie called "Split" is also about a psycho with multiple personalities, but I haven't seen it, so I don't know if it's similar.

You should probably watch more movies and read some good critics like Armond White so you're not a "pleb" and get a little autodidacticism going, but the idea is interesting, and I think you could probably do some interesting camera work to play with the different characters. If you go with an ambiguous ending I suggest leaving clues for the viewer, so that it's not just a meme ending, although it really depends on your approach.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, really appreciate it, do you have suggestions or any ideas of your own?

>in order to give half a shit about the characters you have to kind of understand why they'd get involved in that lifestyle.

I see where you're coming from, but it's not really my taste, and with things like Wolf of Wall Street, he really started to slack on the whole "crime doesn't pay angle".

people will say you copied fight club

start pumping in more influences to make it more diverse.

think the cusack movie was called identity

Three years from now, i'm gonna be at cinema, watching this movie on screen thinking, "I remember something like this from a Sup Forums thread that one time."

Anything is possible, bro.

>hasn't seen Raging Bull or King of Comedy
Your opinion of Scorsese is useless if you haven't seen those films

I gave up on my gangster script because it seemed like I was coasting on the gangster genre, but I think I wasn't giving the Rashomon element enough credit. The series of different perspectives on events are actually all told by one guy who weighs heavily on a nostalgic and fictionalized version of his life story at first, but gradually breaks down and shows the ugly side of things, including his own cowardice and weakness.

the generals with the links get almost no responses.
which sucks because I spent a good while compiling all those links.

these "Screenwriting/Filmmaking" threads have been more productive than any film production general I've made.

I just keep putting Raging Bull off because of how long it is, haven't been able to find an HD link for King of Comedy.
I think I've seen enough Scorsese to not like him though.

Who else /loveEditing/ here

>The series of different perspectives on events are actually all told by one guy who weighs heavily on a nostalgic and fictionalized version of his life story at first, but gradually breaks down and shows the ugly side of things, including his own cowardice and weakness.

Actually that really sounds good, where would you go with the ending, would his character change?

It'll be a lot longer than three years, but we'll see what happens.

Well thanks OP. Good job in this thread.

>read some good critics like Armond White
you were doing well up until then.

Thanks. Neat to hear. I just had an idea for it in my head and might branch it out further in terms of narrative.

Thank you for this! I'll check those out and yes I had this idea after I watched split.

I think that's the going rate for these types of movies anyway.

Yeah, that's what it is.

Why don't you like him? I think he's one of the best, and even when I disagree with him about a movie it's always educational. He's got the erudition to back up his critiques.

No problem user, you'll probably like those De Palma films, they've got great camera work.

Linking to past threads may not be a bad idea.
And they're not in the archive anymore, they were made last week, I didn't realize Sup Forums was becoming even shittier.

I want to continue my discussions from the first thread, but none of those people are probably here and I don't want to ruin this one talking about my shitty half-baked ideas.

how the fuck do i get started if i don't get access to any locations

How do you properly flesh out an idea for a screenplay exactly?

He basically reaches catharsis by finally revealing his past sins, and by the end becomes highly self-aware. Meanwhile his focus on the past has led him to neglect his business in the present, and he gets killed for it in the end.

Change locations.

drop it if it's bad, add more depth and character development if it's good.

>He basically reaches catharsis by finally revealing his past sins, and by the end becomes highly self-aware.
Sounds good.
>Meanwhile his focus on the past has led him to neglect his business in the present, and he gets killed for it in the end.
Wages for sin I guess.

Plot points. Make character diagrams. Sticky note important events or scenes you want.

I have very divisive opinions when it comes to art, but Armond White is contrarian just to be edgy.
I don't believe he actually agrees with some of the shit he says, and if he does, it's insane he was ever allowed to become a professional critic.

Did you see his Get Out review? He completely misunderstood the movie.

>How do you properly flesh out an idea for a screenplay exactly?
you don't.

Yeah, as I plotted it out I try to draw a connection between the character's past and present, and also show that growth as a human being is bad for business as a criminal. If there's a moral undercurrent to speak of, that would be it. Basically he builds an empire through evil actions, but in the end the regret is too much for him, and his efforts to sort of atone end up getting him killed.

Do what > Said. But it also wouldn't hurt to just outline every single detail you have in mind for the story in chronological order.

How do I know it's bad? How do I add "depth"? How do I develop characters in a naturalistic way, creating fictional people who are unique and have the support of the audience? How do I make a character interesting and memorable? How do I build an engaging world? How do I come up with the little details? How do I move the story along in an interesting way so there's no lag in the middle?

What the fuck are character diagrams?

I haven't seen Get Out, but his review didn't strike me as anything outrageous compared to his usual stuff.
>Armond White is contrarian just to be edgy.
I really don't think this, he seems to firmly believe what he writes. I really think you should give him another shot. He clearly watches all sorts of indie and foreign films, and has a knowledge of film history from his education, work, and life as a film watcher. If you look at some of his favorite movies, he includes Spielberg and Wes Anderson several times.

alumnus.caltech.edu/~ejohnson/critics/white.html

He's knows where he stands politically, religiously and morally, which informs how he views films. There are a couple interviews he's done, one for a podcast, and he gave his genuine thoughts on film critique, he's not facetious or contrarian just for the sake of it.

The twin brother in the film Adaptation wrote this fake script in the moive.

The king of comedy is his greatest work nobody cares about. DeNiro is at his absolute best

hello?

Hi, who is this?

hi

sup fellow production bros, how many here actually work in the industry as their main source of income?

What job board do you guys use to find gigs or post for gigs? I've found a few things off 4entertainmentjobs and production paradise cold calls.

Hello?

Anyone else got a Kino maker?

Just bought mines its pretty great for the price.

>unironically saying kino
Please stop. Also get something full frame if you want to make something that actually looks good.

>crew fag with friends and money discouraging others from getting started
why am i not surprised

>tfw want to get into filmmaking but know its not a realistic or sustainable career
>dont know what else I want to do

Same here senpai. Gotta git good.

>unironicaly hating Kino
Fuck off mate ;^)

What camera would you guys recommend for cheap? I've heard that the lighting matters more than the camera.

Sorry bro, I didn't mean to be a dick.

I'll admit I'm a bit cynical when it comes to gear as someone that's been in the film circuit for a couple of years now. No joke, if it doesn't look good, they stop watching in seconds. Shits brutal.

I was wondering if I could get some opinions on a few ideas that I’ve been tinkering with for the past few months. I have three right now that are stuck in the outline/script limbo.

Here's the /p/ sticky for video cameras
pastebin.com/WajU1V5d

It has links to prices. Honestly its all on your price range. I got my camera and a bunch of equipment for about 400 dollars

share them fuckface

I have about 90 dollars.

Second concept – Outline and script stage

A girl accidentally brings cookies laced with cannabutter to her theatre job and shares them everyone. Upon her realizing how much weed is in each cookie everyone on staff has had one. The business day getting busier as everyone on staff knowing, and unknowingly, juggles their work and their highs.

You could always get a camcorder and see what you can do in post to fix it up. Camcorders are cheap and the one o filmed my senior documentary(provided from my school) filmed in hd. Honestly just go on Google shopping and put your price range and look at the ones that for your fancy. I used one like this in high school and it wasn't thhhat bad.

Honestly id recommend you just save up for a decent camera

I'd honestly recommend you save up for a Canon 6D (Not 60D, you fuck) or 7D. These are great quality cameras and they're on the high-end of Canon's consumer grade bodies. The 6D is full-frame and you can get the body for under a grand now. I got mine for 970, body only. New would run you 1500.

where's the first one?

I just felt better posting this one first.

I don't have a job, and I can't save money, I'm being forced to go to Philly next month to hang out with my brother in-law.
Do you think I should invest in a camera and mic just so I can learn how to shoot and lighting?
Or should I try my hand at winning a writing contest and trying to get backed by a production company?
My primary interests are in directing/acting.

Just do both
