I know plenty about the history of Britain, France, and Spain. Please tell me about the history Portugal. All I know is that it used to be part of Spain, split off in the medieval ages, and then was an English ally for like 700 years.

We're older than Spain tho.
Just read the Wikipedia page.

>All I know is that it used to be part of Spain, split off in the medieval ages

It was founded in the Middle Ages when English crusaders stopped in Lisbon on their way to the Holy Land. They spearheaded the Age of Discovery but their idiot teenage king got himself and most of the Portuguese nobility slaughtered invading Morocco. Then Spain stepped in and annexed Portugal for 60 years until the Portuguese won back their independence.

A horrible earthquake leveled Lisbon in 1755. During the Napoleonic Wars, the French invaded Portugal but the British used Lisbon as a base to drive them from the Iberian Peninsula. The royal family moved to Brazil and the king's son decided to stay there and declare independence.

After losing the immense wealth from Brazil, Portugal became impoverished and plagued by endless civil wars for most of the 19th century. This culminated in the army overthrowing the last Portuguese king in 1910 and declaring a republic, but after years of instability the army stepped in again and established a dictator Antonio Salazar who kept the country an isolated, impoverished Catholic theocracy for decades more. His health failed in the late 1960s as he was pushing 80 and the army quietly retired him from power. His successors tried to stop the independence wars of Angola and Mozambique, but the army again revolted and staged a coup a few years later which led to democracy being established and Portugal's last colonies being cut loose.

Then they joined the EU and live off of Germany's money since then. The end. :^)

It was a part of Castile and Leon, then the area around the city of Porto seceded from it and conquered the south from the moors.

>and then was an English ally for like 700 years.

That's all you need to know, so stop being nosy and asking silly questions.

>I know plenty about the history of Britain, France

We learn lot of about Britain and France in our schools but very little about Iberian countries.

yeah this is a pretty good summary

The reason we call places where ships dock "ports" is because the portuguese were expert sailors.

Over 15,000 words in the portuguese language are arabic in origin

> Because Portugal expelled the Moors 300 years earlier than Spain, the Arabic influence in Portuguese was relatively small and left no loanwords in the Portuguese lexicon related to human feelings or emotions. Arabic-derived words are easily identifiable in toponymic names of towns and villages, increasing as you travel south Alfama, Alcácer do Sal, Alcoutim, Aljustrel, Algarve and in words relating to geography, agriculture, architecture, astronomy, mathematics, chemicals and food. Projections estimate 400 to 800 Arabic-derived words in Portuguese, with a tendency to decrease as many of these words have entered in disuse over time:

Should have used this pic.

>It was founded in the Middle Ages when English crusaders stopped in Lisbon on their way to the Holy Land.
How do you stop by Lisbon? It's in the opposite direction from where you need to go.

They took the bus to see Manchester-Benfica and pump up before reaching the holy land.

You fucking retard. They went by boat

I think this belongs on /his/ tbqhwy

>It was founded in the Middle Ages when English crusaders stopped in Lisbon on their way to the Holy Land.

No, it was founded much before that, oficially 1128 -1143 it was a county first in start of the Reconquista times - portucalensis county.... and i will not even talk about centuries before that, because the western part of iberia had already some clear connections, Lusitânia (lusitanians) is the most kowned.
The english crusaders, also german and french/flemish ones helped portuguese crusaders and our 1st king in the Reconquista - Dom Afonso Henriques in some battles, in Lisbon also in the south - algarve.

>Then Spain stepped in and annexed Portugal for 60 years until the Portuguese won back their independence.

It was a union of the crowns since Sebastian King died in battle in africa with thousnads of soldiers, he was somehow crazy and wanted to conquer the entire world. Part of the portuguese nobility died there, also many english, german, italian and spanish volunteers in that army died there. The spanish king was blood related to Sebastian.

>Then they joined the EU and live off of Germany's money since then.

That's non-sense and pathetic.

Out of the 5 iberian kingdoms, including Portugal, 3 of them finished their part of the Reconquista before Portugal finished his.

Dude we went from all north to south and we even helped you many times, Navas de tolosa, battle of Salado. How many times you did the same for us?

You were helping yourselves too. It's not like the almohads or benimerines would have said "eh, no, let's not march to Alentejo because.... reasons" had they won those battles. Other than that, for what purpose should the Kingdom of Navarra or the Kingdom of Aragon care about your specific fight with your Reconquista?? Portugal is too far away from them to matter, just like you didn't care about their specific Reconquista.

Not that your part of the Reconquista was any hard anyway. The bulk of the muslim power and population was always concentrated along the mediterranean and andalucia.

...

Pal, the kingdom of Navarre and aragon, didn´t care when you send emmisars to help you in the marinid invasion, in the batle of Salado, only Portugal replied sending the army, and the king himself.

>Not that your part of the Reconquista was any hard anyway. The bulk of the muslim power and population was always concentrated along the mediterranean and andalucia.

No,for example the reconquer of Lisbon it was with thousands and thousands of soldiers, and in south too in algarve.

PORTUGAL CRLH

>The best and only dictatorship that actually worked and revitalized the country, after a dumpster fire republic and the country has been on the decline ever since

Salazar was a hero.

>one of the deadliest sea creatures, that also happens to 'sail' through the oceans is named after portuguese boats
that should give you a sense of the portuguese navy at its prime.

Northern Portugal is responsible for everything. That's all you need to know really. Every since "Portugal" was founded they only care about fucking black slaves, or getting fucked, wasting money and being corrupt.

Autismo
Portugal é e sempre será um país unido

Lies and propaganda. I hope the EU crashes and this shithole of a country does as well. Go suck on Salazar cock you pseudo commie.

>you

I suppose you mean the Kingdom of Castille. Why would Navarra or Aragon 'help'? It was a fuckton miles away and meant no threat to them. But very close to you and your interests.

There was no obligation for any kingdom to help any other kingdom. Nobody gave a fuck when the catalans were btfo by Simon de Monfort and the French Crusader army f.i.

Also, infighting between the christian kingdoms was relatively common, especially in the central middle ages.

Traitors will be the first to fall shitskin. remember that, history never fails Miguel de Vascocelos, had his part.
Your crap makes no sense and i'm from northern Portugal

matate

>Every since "Portugal" was founded they only care about fucking black slaves, or getting fucked, wasting money and being corrupt.

Wtf are you talking scumbag? the ost glorious chapter of our history were written by people from all over the country or in the reconquista or in hundreds of glorious battles all over the place you piece of shit. usually in a 1-4 disadvantage

>Every since "Portugal" was founded they only care about fucking black slaves, or getting fucked, wasting money and being corrupt.

That's funny commie shitbag trying to d&c because the northern region is the most corrupt of the country by far, also it is the one that receives more european funds, and the one that people receive more gibs from the state, also the most poor.
