.308 is the civilian version, has usually colder loads and is (very) slightly longer, like with .223 and 5.56mm.

you can use .308 in a rifle in 7.62x51, but I wouldn't recommend the other way around.

nope. chambers are slightly different. put a.308 winchester no go headspace gauge in a military 7.62 and watch the bolt close on it.

It's a good rifle not an amazing one. Has tones of recoil from that 7.62 round and the full auto is like trying to hold down a mule according to the soldiers.
