Power Rangers 2017

>two hours long
>3/4's of that runtime is angsty teen depression
>muted color palette
>angry, obnoxious, asshole characters that dislike each other turn into "shared-a-foxhole" vets willing to sacrifice their lives for each other because ??????
>only kid with an actual backstory get glossed over so we can hear about how the lesbian's parents like totally don't even understand her u guise
>oops there's 20 minutes left and we didn't show anything related to Power Rangers. Here's a big ugly Goldar to fight the big ugly Micheal Bay bug-armor zords
What the fuck were they thinking?

All they had to do was hire some 30-something martial artists, have them yell EE-YAHH in ADR, and play some light metal. That's all they had to fucking do.

I liked the chola girl

>oops there's 20 minutes left and we didn't show anything related to Power Rangers. Here's a big ugly Goldar to fight the big ugly Micheal Bay bug-armor zords

So it's like Legendary's Godzilla?

>only kid with an actual backstory get glossed over so we can hear about how the lesbian's parents like totally don't even understand her u guise

Who's the one with the backstory? Gonna assume Jason.

>Who's the one with the backstory
The asian black ranger who gets no screen time

Huh, somehow I had a feeling,

I think PR threads aren't allowed in Sup Forums unless it's specifically about the comics though.

>implying kids shows aren't discussed on Sup Forums
>implying Sup Forums gives a shit about fun

PR is as much as /m/ is a shithole right now

I got banned once for posting a thread about Tommy's actor in relation to the show, so that's what it told me.

You forgot about "sexting is bad and you shouldn't do it, kids"

>mfw Power Rangers almost taken down by cheese pizza

>sending nudes of another girl without their permission
r u a pedo

Wasn't that Power Rangers Turbo?

I went by a news header yesterday saying the "Trini is a lesbian" plot is "pivitol to the film series"

I'm struggling as to how that could be the case.

>this is someone's fetish

They'll cast a girl Tommy and the big romance will be Green and Trini instead of Green and Kim.

Tommy was already confirmed male.

>3/4's of the movie is about developing the teenagers
>Top notch acting on their parts
>Teenagers with actual attitude
>The Ranger parts were shit
The parts without them being rangers were cool as fuck, they could've been better with the action scenes and put more of them along the movie, but apart that the movie is pretty normal, not a good movie but not a bad one too

Nobody watches Power Rangers for the social moments.

No matter how hard you shit post, you have to give them credit for having the balls to use the cheesy stuffy, in a marvel movie you just get knowing winks and DC ignores it.
No one else would put 'go go power rangers' and 'make my monster grow' in their movies.

Sure but all the things kids watched Mighty Morphin to see aren't in this film, so...

>people ripping on the only movie that got "teenagers with attitude" right
Mind you there's not much competition, but this is a leap forward in Power Rangers standards

Yeah, but in a movie with shit Rangers parts you can like the actual good parts

RIP when?

I want to watch it. I will like it, I know it

Plenty of time yet

The problem is that they included the cheesy stuff alongside the "mature" stuff and the teenage angst, it was the wort case of tonal whiplash I've seen outside of a David Willis comic.

>Jerking off the Ball
>revenge Pornography

What is this movie's audience?

Sounds to me like what you wanted wasn't Power Rangers.

And since the movie isn't Power Rangers, you seem to have enjoyed it.

The fatal flaw is: it was supposed to be Power Rangers

if your standards are in a ditch sure you will.

>you have to give them credit for shoving in lines meant solely for trailers/promos that have no place in the grim tone the movie sets
No and fuck you for even saying that

Man, just watch the Japanese tokusatsu movies. They're silly slightly bigger-budget theatrical versions of typical episodes, but they're pretty fun:

Did you ever watch power rangers. 3/4ths of the show was campy teen drama.

It sounds more like you didn't want actual power rangers, you wanted something else, and were disappointed.

I bet you're the kind of joyless faggot that approved of them taking out the voltron transformation too.

Yet that was the majority of the show.

I didn't get that she was sent a nude. Maybe I missed a few lines but I thought it was just a pic of her getting drunk and being all gross. But now that everyone said it, it makes sense

By the way, this was really fucking cool, how do I get into Power Rangers? It's like 2 different shows, how does that work?

I think we can all agree: This is far, far from the worst Power Rangers have ever been.

Mostly because at least the rangers have character. Which is more than some entire seasons can say.

I thought it was entertaining as a movie.
It was built on a fuckload of clichés but it also knew it was. Like, a lot of things were thrown in pretty much out of obligation to the genre but the writing and directing staff knew it so it was played at face value or quickly brushed aside.

The movie is essentially a Spider-man origin story with five Peter Parkers.

>The movie is essentially a Spider-man origin story with five Peter Parkers.

Even Kimberly? She was a hot popular girl?

It screams "unrelated script we threw a recognizable name onto"

Nigger I fucking loved the power rangers as a kid and marathoned the first two series' before the movie

The rangers were all about being friends and accepting everyone and everything. The worst the "drama" got was one ranger being too focused on something for about 5 minutes.

That's not in the same fucking galaxy as sexting scandals and gay family dynamics

Fuck you, those lines would be great if the movie was fun and cheesy but it's not. You're letting single fucking lines trick you.

It's like if after Bale escapes the pit in Dark Knight Rises he said "nananananananana BATMAN!"

>implying Sup Forums gives a shit about fun

For the past two weeks Sup Forums was watching the power ranger marathon on twitch and having threads about it.

Yeah.

I get the impression people shitting real hard on this movie don't even remember watching the show or any of the movies.

Were they expecting it to be like the Transformers movies or something? I was actually worried it would go that route.

It's a movie for people who hate Power Ranger made by people who hate Power Rangers.

>poster lives in an alternate reality where the Power Rangers 2017 movie was fun with clear visuals
The problem, user, is that the rest of us live in the real world where the movie was 90 minutes of obnoxious and decidedly un-fun teen angst followed by 20 minutes of Bayformers.

The old power Rangers movie was actually pretty good.

She was as socially outcast as any of them at the start of the movie.

It's not
They are lying

All I've heard about this movie was some people bitching about the rangers having powers while unmorphed. No idea if it's true but I think the idea has some merit. I mean if some powerless teenagers that have only ever had the basic karate class you can take anywhere as training are able to take down Putties it's a wonder more official forces like the police or military don't take them down.

On the off chance they make a sequel I honestly would not be surprised if they got JDF to play Tommy again as a way to pander to nostalgia fags in a last ditch effort to "save the franchise", I mean it's not like he'd be expensive to get or anything.

It's a 30 second moment with it never being brought up again.

Which is better than "OMG I'm so lesbian. Look at me I'm lesbian"

as much as it bothered me how little time the rangers spent morphed in the original movie, looking back on it now I feel it was necessary.

At least it had Ninjetti moments in the meantime.

My feelings on this movie were mixed but overall I liked it.

My biggest issue was that there were not enough fight scenes. You only have one fight in the whole movie where they fight together as a group morphed and then one short as fuck sequence with the Red Ranger a little while later.

Like, how hard could it have been to have had, at the very least, a longer Putty sequence?

Actually, a better thing they could've done was have Rita make more than one monster, instead of just Goldar (who was nothing like how he was in the original show btw), and sort of adapt the monster-of-the-week formula by having them fight another monster and a group of putties like halfway through the movie or something.

I was pleasantly surprised by them actually using the MMPR theme song and putting "Make my monster grow!" in the movie though. More superhero movies actually need fanservice and cheese like that.

I also really liked the intro, with Zordon and the other alien ranger, and Rita. That bit of expanded lore gives the setting a great cosmic, starfaring flavor. Rita herself was really great too, the best kind of hammy villain.

I am eagerly anticipating the sequel.

JDF can't play a teenager anymore. The man is massive, tattooed like a biker gang and his face looks like he went through rehab (though just his face admittingly).

In the movie Rita attacked Trini at her home and threw her into the walls a couple of times
If Trini didn't have basic heightened defense she would have died

I wonder what Sentai fans from overseas think about it. I imagine most are confused.

Plus, the new Power Rangers movie doesn't have Bulk and Skull.

Power Rangers is adapted from a Japanese TV show. The shows are entirely unrelated but use the same footage.

If you want to watch Power Rangers, Just start with season 1 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. There's some lists online that tell you which episodes are filler and worth skipping, which I'd recommend using.

Oh...

I guess I should say I have not seen the movie (Is it out? I don't know) and I have not been keeping up. So anything they've said about Tommy I have no idea about. So what have they confirmed about Tommy? Also keep in mind anything they said in a press release or whatever could always be changed later. What's said, shown, etc in the movie itself is a bit harder to change.

How does that work in the new movie anyway? Do they just kind of gloop together like clay?

Tommy isn't in the movie. S/He is referenced in a credit scene with just a green jacket
JDF and Amanda are cameos in a crowd shot

Attitude = cool and badass in the 90's

They redub power rangers and broadcast it in Japan, and there was already a power rangers movie at the height of its popularity, so I doubt it's confusing to them.

No combining sequence whatsoever
They fall into a pit and come out as a whole megazord

So did it bother anyone else that the Zord battle at the end was way longer than the morphed fight scene right before it?

Considering that the movie tried it's hardest to be Bayformers, but Power Rangers, the cynic in me just makes me think they were really trying to chase the Bayformers audience. I would've forgiven the direction if there were just more fight scenes.

My name is Mitch

There's some crunching and melting as they fall into the pit, it cuts to outside of the pit and they come out fully formed

There was a lot more character development than I expected, which is nice and all but does cut down the amount of action we get.

I suppose they are saving it for the sequel

As a robot enthusiast, that makes me angry

and at the same time it makes me wonder how the combining toy works.

Ah, never mind then. Was about to say they don't have to make Tommy a teenager, I think in the original show Rita even went "Teenagers? Zordon I'm surprised at you!" when she found out who the rangers were, so her choosing an adult with a lot more training, experience, less mood swings, etc to take them down would also make more sense. Especially if once the brainwashing is cured he just becomes the defacto leader of the Rangers like in the show, more believable if he's an adult I think. I don't think they'd do it like the current comics with how they're questioning Tommy and feeling uneasy about him and all that shit.

Rita made my monster grow, if you know what I mean.

Had she given you a tumor?

I really liked the movie.

It made me care about the characters and even though the ranger parts were severely lacking, I cared about what was happening to them and wanted to see them succeed.

It works for an origin story. If their goal is to make this into a franchise, then I'd say this works.

I feel bad because I wasn't very familiar with JDF or Amy and I didn't really notice anyone in the crowd. Nothing really stood out as "Hey look at us"

What did he mean by this?

Please explain

It felt like all of its scenes were just occurring in a vacuum. The narrative structure was terrible: nothing was sufficiently explained, there was no weight to anything that was happening, the plot was constantly stumbling over itself in a desperate bid to squeeze both trite teen drama and lackluster action scenes into its running time and I ultimately ended up losing interest because the whole thing felt like it was going in several directions at once without having any idea of exactly where it wanted to end up.

Did the pacing of the movie seem off to anyone else? It felt like things were happening too fast but also as if they weren't happening as much as they should have been.

As a /m/an, I was pissed too, although i was more pissed in retrospect.

Walking out of the theater I was satisfied with the movie. It's how a reboot should be done: New enough spin on things with nudges and winks to the older stuff.

The characters were a lot more fleshed out than I was expecting: Billy is one of the better portrayal of someone on the spectrum in recent memory, Jason was frustrated with his mistakes and loss but given a second chance, Kimberly used to be a bitch but trying to do good now. Zack we don't see a lot of, but he does daredevil stuff to escape the pain of taking care of his sick mother. Trini we see nothing except that she's the moody gay one, which is a shame.

Rita was a decent threat, with all that implied ripping out people's teeth and shit.
The choosing of Rangers were handwaved as "fate", but we do see how that turns out i.e. they are all fuck-ups and can't morph and Zordon is frustrated with them.

Jason Got in trouble for bringing a bull into a rival football team's locker. His friend thought it was a cow and milked the animal
Kimberly sent the nudes of her friend to a guy so he won't date the other girl

They make a joke 5 minutes into the movie that Jasons friend milked the cow to calm her down, to which Jason corrects his friend that he milked "him. It's a bull. Did it have one udder?" The friend replies that it was huge and he had to use two hands. Then they agree to never talk about it again[/Spoiler]

Kims plot line has to deal with sending nudes of her friend to their boyfriend without permission and the photos get spread

That bull joke was so fucking stupid. It didn't work when you realize that the dude should've been able to tell the fucking difference between a dick and some udders.

It really felt like something they threw in there, because they wanted the Michael Bay audience.

>Worldwide $59,200,000 on a 100 mil budget

Yeah, I really hope nobody took too much stock in the 5 sequels thing

Hell I honestly can't see this doing better than Fant4stic

...Honestly I thought at the beginning that it was Bulk and Skull.

Something just hit me about the designs.
They're even more fucked up than I thought.
If the current toy is the Deluxe Megazord, there's no way that it will be able to combine with the Dragonzord in the second or third movie.
When the combining robots have always been one of the biggest draws of Power Rangers.

>the "Trini is a lesbian" plot is "pivitol to the film series"
It's only there for like a few seconds and I seriously believe it was only put in because they could use it as marketing bait since it doesn't even come up past the one moment

I fucking lost it (and so did everyone in the theater) because I wasn't expecti g it but then I realized it's a fucking Power Rangers movie. It was funny but i'm annoyed that they put it in a PR movie

I almost didn't even realise that it was what they were alluding to for a moment, it was such a throwaway line.

>3/4ths of the show was campy teen drama.
I don't know what Power Rangers you were watching (especially since I'm assuming you're only talking about MMPR) but the one I watched about campy fun when it wasn't Ranger fights and when it was about your so called "drama", it generally came from the villains having an evil plot or something, not the teen drama here

I guess part of the joke is Jason's friend being an idiot.

Does it remind any of you how we were shown splitting ground when Rita enlarged monsters in the series?

It was. The whole gay Trini thing was bait to get some cheap buzz from idiot reviewers

Trini was the most underdeveloped of them all.

>I get the impression people shitting real hard on this movie don't even remember watching the show or any of the movies.
Do you?

Speaking of, I liked that Jason put the bully guy in his place but I didn't like how he had no real sense of humor either.

It was a stupid joke that had no business being in a PR movie, even for what they were going for.

I dunno, maybe they'll hook her and Kimberly up in the sequel.

I have to say, I am relieved they didn't go the easiest route of making Billy gay because David Yost was.

>It's how a reboot should be done
Nigga you can't possibly be serious.

They probably don't want to stir up any more crap with the chink being yellow ranger and black one being black ranger, let along Yost being bullied for being gay

Kimberly will probably be the same romance plot with Jason and Tommy though

Yep, what I was thinking. Save that joke for the latest R rated reboot of some show from the 90s like Chips (which is decent) or 21 Jump Street

Was it THAT bad? Is MMPR 2017 remixed theme at least good?

Tommy better do his attack shouting like his OG actor Jason did, along with his unique "its morphing time" inflection.

>Is MMPR 2017 remixed theme at least good?
They play the theme for like 10 seconds before switching it to Kanye West's Power and that's all you hear it

>MMPR 2017 remixed theme
There's just the opening chord before it cuts to Kanye.

Pretty good and unexpected (to me at least). Some people cheered when it happened
