Why is Western Europe the most dominant and influential region both economically and culturally (the US are just a continuation of it)? Is it because they adopted the heritage of Ancient Rome and Greece? But why did then some former countries of Byzantine Empire become shitholes?

muslims? they conquered the byzantine empire aswell as laid continual waste to eastern europe in their attempts to take over the entire world.

and whilst that was happening, western europe were for the most part spared of that onslaught cause they managed to hold them back, so they had quite an easier time. Except when the muslims made sea transportation pretty much impossible cause they raided all ships, including coastal raids, and plunged europe into the dark ages.

So much of european history with regards to turmoil can be easily understood if you ask yourself the simple question, what were the muslims doing whilst this was happening.

TL;DR western europe had it a lot better than eastern europe because the muslims couldn't manage to mess with it on a constant basis as they did with eastern europe.

best genes
had no inhibitory policies like communism or islam

Far away from the enemy

They always had Eastern Europe protecting them from the Muslims hordes.

Sure France held the southern flank but southern France is a shithole nowadays

You're talking about germanic culture. Why is it the most dominant and influential? Because we're superior, that's why.

What are you even talking about? We've been fighting slavs for hundreds of years. There are more enemies than just muslims.

You got your ass handed to you by Russia so hard that you haven't recovered since.

However Russia didn't invade you and destroy your culture, convert you to orthodox, or turn you into brown shitskins.

>You got your ass handed to you by Russia so hard that you haven't recovered since.
We BTFO'd them over and over and over again (while still fighting other countries, even Norway and Denmark). The only reason they won is because they had WAAAY more people than us. They could literally just send army after army.
>However Russia didn't invade you and destroy your culture, convert you to orthodox, or turn you into brown shitskins.
Exactly, why didn't they? If they were so superior they should have. They didn't because they knew they couldn't.

Don't talk about shit you know nothing about.

Guns, Germs and steel tries to explain that.

I think it's basically the unique seafaring culture that started with Greece, let the Romans have a Mediterranean empire, then Britain, France, the Dutch, Spain etc etc. The navy played the biggest role imo.

>guns germs and steel..
Stop trolling us romania :D

This is also why western leftists have been so easily decieved by muslim immigration not being a bad thing and why muslims have been allowed into those types of nations, whilst eastern europeans are like "mass muslim immigration, are you fucking crazy?"

Because they were 1, shielded from Ottomans by Central/Iberian Europeans. 2, Mastered nautical exploration and colonization.

what did horses look like before domestication? they must have looked something like zebras, right?

Romance-speaking countries also did well at some point.

Islam may explain only why Balkans are shithole. But Poland or Lithuania are backwards even without major battles with muslims.

Communism aka having half your population retarded enough to fall for commie nonsense.

Guys like you are the cancer of this site - nothing personal

I don't fully agree with everything in that book.
But the explanation of agriculture->domestication->cities->civilization is very, very solid. Why Europeans managed to do it and Africans didn't is still left for debate.

As others noted, Muslims dominated the Mediterranean a few centuries ago. They were developing algebra and modern medicine while Europe was in the dark ages. In 1683, the Ottoman empire was at the gates of Vienna.

China and India were more advanced than the West for a long time. Both have rebounded since WWII, especially China.

Different empires in different parts of the world dominated in different eras. Ok, in the 19th century the West dominated the world. It is kind of short-lived - in 1700, Vienna had barely fought off the Ottomans. In the 20th century, the West has been losing power since WWII. In some respects China has the world's largest economy. Our smartphones are designed and built in China, Korea and Japan. Programming is stil centered in San Francisco, but things are shifting.

We wuz backwards way before communism. Oxford uni was founded in the 11th century--Lithuanians still used to shit in the woods at that time.
One could explain this with the lack of the contact with the Roman civilisation, but then again, Vikings had none too, yet they still managed to develop a civilsation with things like Althingi.

Meh... it's more like some nations are always on the world stage in one way or another (China, Italy) while others rise and fall really fast (Macedonia, the Mongols).

The US and the West will probably be in the first category (I hope).
