But in terms of per capita GDP, Japan beats the shit outta China. Japan's GDP per head(about 38000) is quadruple that of China(about 8000). No matter how large an economy is, as long as its per capita GDP is low as shit, there's no point.

nah, GDP per capita is pretty useless when it comes to national power. i mean, it's useful for evaluating the relative wealth of the individuals and it's living standards. but it doesn't matter much on a national scale where industrial and economic power are more relevant. example, Luxembourg has high GDP capita, but is relatively very weak on the international stage.
