i just spent 20 minutes trying to find a video I saw on YouTube, about how China's whole cultural identity has become one of imitation. it's the one where they use the clip from Crazy Rich Asians where she says "we were inspired by the hall of Versailles", over and over and over.
but, it doesn't matter because Hollywood just imitates itself now, we have the same problem.
the bigger problem is that if authoritarians can control art in a country they don't even rule, it means authoritarians anywhere can strong-arm any capitalist country to do their bidding. see also Saudi Arabia.
it's not lost on me that Disney released Legend of the Three Caballeros in Duterte's Phillipines before in the USA. not that either country is particularly special to Disney, but it's just that "a market is a market is a market" – release schedules don't have to put America first, and studios have already been conditioned into habits that don't really ever offend authoritarians -- not just China and the promise of its audience of billions, but our own Department of Defense has considerable influence over the entire action movie genre. Hollywood always plays ball. This Pooh-Xi thing is an aberration that will be smoothed out in no time.

The missiles is the main thing (cyber-strikes notwithstanding) i'm worried about, they've been developing missile tech unfettered by any treaty for the past 50 years, and has been heavily ramped up under Xi into LITERAL hypersonic nuclear missile territory right now.
Also we're in a bizarre WWI type scenario where military technology has changed so much since any sort military engagement between symmetrical powers that we have no idea how the fuck things would actually play out. I personally think it's gonna be like 70% day-one cyber and missile strikes but that's just me i'm not a Pentagon official, not that even they truly know.

Can. We have military superiority. But won't. Their cheap labor and audience of billions is worth too much to American investors.
