>Why don’t you believe in this thing with zero evidence

Gee I dunno

Because there is no evidence of a god. If there was there would be no question of his existence. If he wanted me to believe he could make it happen. Yet, he doesnt. Either he's not there or he doesnt care enough to show me, in which case neither do i.

I do because I studied the bible and then had a religious experience of the holy spirit washing over my heart. I now pray every day.

Because I find the other possibility that the universe is random too depressing

Attached: cross.jpg (772x960, 115K)

i like to say its because at an early age I saw that bot everyone believed in the same god. When I was told more about the god I was expected to belive in, I attempted to comparison shop other gods.

This didnt go over well.

But the simple and basic truth is that the capacity for spiritual belief and magical thinking is set by a section of your brain in the left inferior parietal lobule that you dont actually have control over.

Depending on the details of this structure, some people will never be spiritual, some people will be deeply so.

Because the universe is beautiful, complex and fascinating in it's own right. It is indifferent to the affairs of humans or any species. Trying to understand and accept the genuine truth is a far more satisfying experience than believing in myths solely designed to keep humans orderly and subdued.

I believe in God because I feel a sense of right-ness in it. I was baptized Catholic at 27 years old - after years of "edgy atheism" throughout my youth. My atheism was really just a front for fear. I was never raised religious in way way shape or form but I always felt like there was a higher power, something, that watched over us.

I didn't want to admit it when I was young because most of my friends were atheists so I just kind of went along with the crowd. After finally growing up I was willing to discuss that feeling. And a few years of self-reflection and candid discussion I began to put a name to that feeling. Christianity, specifically Catholicism, was what felt truly right to me.

I stay with it because I feel peace in it. I believe my prayers are listened to and I believe my communion with God to be real. Because I discovered it later in life I feel a very personal connection to my religion. Regardless of what the Holy Cee does, I feel a very real connection to God .

sucker

just because "the holy spirit washed over you heart" doesn't mean you're supposed to pray

>Feelings, no evidence

What a peon.

And Utah has spoken.

I prefer the scientific perspective myself but good for you user. We all gotta do what feels right for ourselves, or what's the point.

And yet his eyes are open and he doesn't just believe blindly.

> And yet his eyes are open and he doesn't just believe blindly.

Yes, he does.
Note the existence of the word “belief” many times in his post.
Belief without evidence is stupid.

And? What do you think faith is? You guys keep saying
>evidence
over and over, as though it matters to us. Do you think we're completely ignorant to the fact that religion was used in the past to explain what we more deeply understand now?

People used to think that earthquakes were God's wrath. But the discovery and understanding of plate tectonics does not disprove God. The advancement of the sciences simply disproves things that ORGANIZED RELIGIONS have used God to explain.

The existence of God is not contingent on a Pope, an Imam, or a Rabbi. God doesn't need churches, synagogues, nor mosques. God doesn't need monuments or men or anything - God IS. And the more people discover about the universe, the inherent and natural complexity of it, the more and more people will find God. Before we looked at mountains and saw God. Now we see the delicate interaction of particles that create all of existence and we see God.

The very evidence you scream that defeats God actually only defeats the weak explanations of men who didn't know any better or didn't WANT to know any better.

God was here before humans were there to believe, and God will be there after.

nope

i don't believe in gods but i dont mind religious people. unless they are missionary types and trying to convince me of something. who would have ever thought that a religious salesman would be a thing? "want to buy a seat in the afterlife?"

>Now we see the delicate interaction of particles that create all of existence and we see God.
No we don't see god, that's the point. The more we observe and understand the less evidence of god there seems to be.

> And? What do you think faith is?
Belief without evidence. Something very stupid.

> over and over, as though it matters to us.
Point proven. Thanks for being honest and admitting religion consists only of a rickety shack of “belief” devoid of rational or empirical justification.

Many religions teach that is the duty of believers to spread the faith. Some sects take that literally, whereas others take it more as a "feel free to wear your religion on your sleeve"

> God IS.

I’d ask you to prove it but prior statements of yours in this very post suggest that you’re fully aware that you can’t, and don’t have evidence. Therefore, your claims aren’t valid.

Depending on what you referring to as God. I believe in a higher being then is mere humans. And it's better to not know of it's existence.

Because there is currently no god in existence that doesn't require some measure of faith to accept, and I think "faith" is way overrated and certainly nothing one should devote their life to.

You don't see connection and that is fine. More power to you, but for millions of us, we do. I don't see why a theologian, a few hundred years ago, says "[This thing] exists because God", but now science says, "Nah, [this thing] actually exists because of [reason] (CiteData, 2018+1), is somehow proof that God doesn't exist.

All it proves is that theologian was talking out of his asshole. And, as I said, God existed before that blowhard and he will exist after.

I belive in God because our complex universe, time and space are just too big to be random. We are not free in the way we think and in what we want and everyone's destiny is already written. I believe in God despite all the awful things going on on our Earth because we as humans failed and this is our punishment. I believe in God because it gives me strength.

However, i don't belive in heaven/hell, i don't judge other people because that is God's responsibility and i absolutely disdain religious institutions whom use their power to control people and think they can be in God's place.

You are either trolling, or one of those people with a spiritual bent to that left inferior parietal lobule, and thus, prone to magical thinking.

>I don't see why a theologian, a few hundred years ago, says "[This thing] exists because God", but now science says, "Nah, [this thing] actually exists because of [reason] (CiteData, 2018+1), is somehow proof that God doesn't exist.

Literally no one in this entire thread said that any scientific discovery or breakthrough constituted a disproof of “God” or whatever the hell it is you think lives in the closet. That’s a Strawman you paraded out to hit with a stick.

> And, as I said, God existed before that blowhard and he will exist after.

Do you have ANY evidence of that or are you talking out your ass just like the theologian?

You use "rational" as though there is only one way to be rational. C'mon man, you guys are supposed to be the smart one, the critical thinkers who take nothing at face value and question everything, right?

Any theist who sits there and blindly believes in God without questioning their religion is, at worst, a fool and, at best, confused. Faith requires question - not blind adherence.

Do you understand how confusing it was for me, a GROWN MAN, who works in engineering to believe in a higher power? My entire life, my entire education, was based on "the real" things that matter. And yet I always saw something behind the mirror.

It took years of talking to people to reconcile that. I mean the lady that led my adult baptism classes was a molecular biologist, if it wasn't for her I don't think I would have been able to join it.

What I think really scares you is choice. You don't want people to think beyond what experts say. Like I said above, you guys always talk about being the critical thinkers, but when someone like me critically thinks their way into God's arms you get angry.

To you there is only one way to think. And that makes you no better than the bible-thumping American Protestants who try to tell you that man & dinosaurs lived together.

1. Because religious fags always have to think that everyone worships THEIR god.
2. Because there was countless religions before mainstream religions today.
3. There is still many religions today which are contradictory to each other, which begs the question who is correct?
4. All wars in history are the result of religions, whether they were simple or not.
5. Because it is funny to watch Religions dwindling numbers every year, by 2026 it will be 50% numbers of today.
6. Because I want to live every day life without worrying if some made up deity will anally rape me or let me into a fictional heaven/afterlife.

Maybe he did try just you didnt notice it

1. Jesus promised to rid the world of wicked men
2. Odin promised to rid the world of Frost Giants
3. ??????
4. GLOBAL WARMING

>4. All wars in history are the result of religions, whether they were simple or not.
Some wars were just over regular land or resources between people of the same religions.

Otherwise good list.

That would mean god *failed* to get his attention.
Can't have the all-powerful all-knowing god failing, now can we?

Omg. Hail ODIN!

>is somehow proof that God doesn't exist.
Well, anyone with any scientific background would never say that. There will never be proof that god doesn't exist because you can't prove a negative. That's like me asking you to "prove that rainbow unicorns don't exist". You can't. There is presently no proof that rainbow unicorns exist and the same is true for gods. That's all. If someone "believes" that god doesn't exist well then that's a completely different argument. True science simply says that the verdict is still out.

> You use "rational" as though there is only one way to be rational.

Please tell me which epistemological system you’re using in which believing in “God”, whatever that’s even supposed to be, is rational because you “””see””” him in the interactions of particles.

> Faith requires question - not blind adherence.
“ complete trust or confidence in someone or something.”
“ strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.”

Please stick to using definitions that other people actually accept and use. Doing otherwise is dishonest. By definition, faith does not question.

> And yet I always saw something behind the mirror.

That’s lovely, and my schizophrenic aunt used to think the government followed her in black cars.
Prove that “something” exists or admit you can’t and stop wasting your time posting. Nothing will convince me except independently verifiable empirical evidence.

>speculative ad hominem subject changing

BOOOOOOOOOOORRRRIIIIINNNNG

> but when someone like me critically thinks their way into God's arms you get angry.

You did not use “critical thinking”. That’s a lie, and you’re aware of it.
Show me exactly how you logically concluded that God exists.

It's difficult for me to believe that the universe/multiverse exists without some sort of cause or intelligent design. At the same time it's hard for me to believe this "designer" gives a fuck about individual sentient beings.

I think there are religions that suggest that. And you could avoid monotheism, which basically means you could avoid a religion that's not completely evil.

Monotheistic religions are the most vile and repugnant ones by far.

>God must be almighty, otherwise he wouldn't be God.
>God must know everything, otherwise he wouldn't be almighty.
>Therefore, God must have absolute knowledge of the past, present and future.
>If God knows the future, he knows what every single person will do. He can't be wrong or have imprecise knowledge, because he wouldn't be almighty if he did.
>Therefore, freedom cannot exist under a God, because everything we do or undergo is according to his knowledge.
>Can God defy his own knowledge of the future? If God knows that he will do something eventually, can he decide to do something differently?
>If he can, his knowledge of the future up to that point was flawed and, therefore, he cannot be almighty.
>If he cannot, there are things which he cannot do, and therefore he cannot be almighty.

>this makes me sad, therefore it cannot be true

Attached: 3d7u50.jpg (500x624, 79K)

>everyone's destiny is already written. I believe in God despite all the awful things going on on our Earth because we as humans failed and this is our punishment.
Why would God punish us for something, if we are not in control of our actions and therefore did not have a choice in doing it or not?

You forgot something crucial here... Define god.

Pretty much yes. At the same time, it's like a a man on a sinking boat believing he can swim to shore. He knows it's not rational at the same time it's the only belief that's useful.

Monotheistic religions understand God as an almighty, benevolent entity that precedes and has created everything else. Other beliefs mix it up a bit, but they bring their own problems. The point is that almightiness is in itself a contradiction.

>why do/don't you believe in god?
i do. he just doesn't look like an old man.
>your god last showed himself 2000 years ago
>and then it was always either shitty nonsense like burning bushes
>or people getting tortured to death

>my god show himself to people every single day
>and the experience is always delivious

You are conflating predestination and predetermination.
You are also conflating infinite with unconstrained.

Those are all synonyms.

because i'm not a fat, gay yuro. i believe in God btw.

Don't bother. Christian "thinkers" have been tying themselves into knots like this for 2000 years, trying to reconcile the irreconcilable.

If you were a 11th-century monk, what were you supposed to do?

Now we have better information, of course, but some deluded fuckers are still playing this game. Who cares?

citation

There are fine shades of meaning.

Starting with the easier of the set, the natural numbers are infinite. 1,2,3,4.... you will never reach the end. At the same time they are constrained to being greater than 0.

God can be considered infinite in power, but still constrained to only doing good.

The difference between predestination and predetermination can be viewed as the difference between stacking the deck and knowing the order of the cards. There is still some wiggle room for free will, who takes a hit etc., but the outcome is known.

God to me is a force, like, Gravity.
There is SOMEthing that creates the Stars, planets etc. The Force of a 'God' can not be disproven but there must be a Force too create. So that may just be God itself..

>God to me
> is a physics cereal, like, skunks

Are we randomly redefining words now?

I was raised religious and I really did give it a good try with several denominations of Christianity as well as a studying a few others. I simply don't see anything compelling to make me believe.

Nothing he said was analogous to the word salad you posted.

who creates everything then damns said creations to burn for eternity if they don't believe in him. did I mention homebody been gone since like forever so you gotta have "faith" that's like your dad going out for a pack of smokes then me burning in hell for not awaiting his return.

that you believe that is what makes this so sad

sounds like every generic religious experience I have ever heard.

Nah it's really not. Remove your head from your rectum. I don't agree with him but deliberately misrepresenting someone makes you look retarded.

sure you don't, samefag

if anyone can redefine god as gravity, there is no way to have a meaningful debate about it. what are we even debating?

Christianity was poisoned. You need to separate what it is today from what it was before WWII. It was a set of instructions to live by through which your people would flourish, not the modern acceptance of every sin and vice. Today, you're told to do exactly the opposite of the instructions laid out by Christianity by the Jews in control of your education and media and it's resulted in Christian nations having very few children and literally dying out. Imported third worlders substitute for the children you didn't have and once they become a majority they'll just vote to rob you and once they're a large majority they'll replace your culture with their own. Christianity needs reformed. You can be the second coming of Jesus. It's time.

Seems like having a trillion empty worlds out there we can't use separated by a medium we haven't been able to cross without dying of old age kind bodes well for randomness.

I mean if these things were all designed for our biology and we could touch a magic stone to teleport to them all, you might have a better case for a creator.

I'm not denying god, it might exist,I can't disprove it BUT why are most gods such assholes? And most moderately religious people are not following the religion correctly, so they will not get to heaven, meaning that the intent never matters, god doesn't see you for your thoughts or reasons, just your actions.

>>Christianity is poison

ftfy

Leviticus 25:44-46 (NIV)

44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

But God cannot be constrained. As soon as there's a single thing he is incapable of doing, he's no longer almighty. Same thing for the card allegory; God must have perfect knowledge of every single part of the process.

As opposed to today where you're enslaved by technology by your own countrymen.

Why does God need to be able to be evil?
You are setting definitions in order to create the contradiction.
Can something be good yet cause suffering?
I got a flu shot which caused pain and swelling in my arm. I had a 1:20 chance of getting the flu before and now I have a 1:200,000 of getting the flu.
There was a 95% chance that the flu shot caused me needless suffering.
