It's a manga that's been running for 20+ years now, and it's pretty incredible. One of the things that's most interesting about it, is that the author has basically reinvented himself in his style several times throughout the series, while still keeping it true to its roots. During the first 10 volumes (referred to collectively as the "Golden Age" arc), it's basically gritty 80s style manga of purely dark medieval warfare, becoming borderlined historical fiction. but in volumes 11-12+ literally hell opens up and pours itself onto earth evil dead style but in a completely serious manner. Over the next ~5 volumes you have every bit of bad in his world corrupted and risen to full blown demonic rape-fests; corrupt priests burning everyone at the stake, packs of roving goblins kidnapping women, raping and impregnating them to make more monsters, an evil god-emporer who tries to take over the world etc. It then turns into a traditional swords/sorcery fantasy where Guts assembles a team of rag-tag heroes to destroy the five God Hands of hell, one of whom was his best friend and rival during the Golden Age.

this is probably a sign that i should start reading it
people seem to love it and compare it to dark souls alot which im a huge fan of. i tried to get into the anime but i just couldnt get through it. i do love dark anime despite not being that big of a weeb. i watched Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Attack on Titan and loved both. stories with early forshadowing and payoffs are always the best
the first couple of episodes were nice but then it just gets so boring and slow. i tried to get back into it for maybe 3 times now
also the fact that it just looks fucking ass doesnt help much

97 version i assume. i was told that the movies look a lot better but skip ton of the story, which i absolutely hate. i like to pay attention to little details and character motivations. and with skipped content i feel left out of those.
also you should defintely try out ds. but only if you can bite through lots of suffering. especially for beginners you will end up dying alot. but thats the charm of the game. the combat is very unique and kinda ruined alot of other games for me

'97 version is pic related.
The movies and '16/'17 series are very heavy on CGI, and it's a bit horrifying to look at, and they do skip a bunch of content.
The '97 anime is pretty faithful, but the manga is definitely the way to go with Berserk.
One of these days I'll start on DS, it's on the bucket list.
