I lived in Japan for 3 years while in the Navy. Had a house and shit. Was a real sailor, not one of those shore faggots so I did spent a lot of time elsewhere, but also had port visits to other Japanese cities.
Been all over Honshu. Some time in Kyushu and Okinawa. So I got a nice mix of biggest cities and smallest villages.
Almost everyone has their shit together. The very few homeless had their wits about them. They weren't like in my home of California where they'd scream at you, rob you, hustle you, or shit on your doorstep. Everyone is polite. Crime was virtually nonexistent. I left my house unlocked for months at a time while at sea and had no problem. I would leave my bike in front of my house and it was never stolen.
The young Japanese loved Americans. The girls would fucking swoon. It was comical. I would go into clubs and Japanese dudes would have me dance with their girls and buy me drinks. The girls weren't ultra slutty, they were professional but they also didn't use sex as a weapon. It was all chill. None of the shitty American woman behavior, but not "submissive" either.
Clean as fuck. Everyone cleaned around their houses and businesses. Few trashcans and no litter.
Perfect example of Japaneseness, big weekend for Japanese, everyone out getting shitfaced in Tokyo, guys in suits passed out in bushes, chicks vomiting on the sidewalk. Cops out in full force, using batons...to gently prevent the drunks from wandering into traffic.

They do have vending machines on every corner. Vending machines with hot and cold drinks. Vending machines where each purchase has a game and if you win you get another free drink. Vending machines with all other kinds of shit like fresh cooked noodles or pizza, toys, porn, etc. Fuck they still have cigarette dispensers. But I never saw panties anywhere. I did however see that in the sexy areas, like where there's a bunch of whores and strip clubs, the vending machines would reflect the subject matter. I imagine whatever few "used panties" machines existed, they would be in the sleazy areas. The notion that they'd just be in a normal part of town is not how Japan works. Japan has some really perverted shit, but they are very big into compartmentalizing everything.

Basically this. Its nice how even the biggest crime syndicates mostly deal in dark business and don't really harass indivituals. Especially for visitors and company embassadors. The only problem I know of is their work ethic. It is kinda fucked up. Since childhood they have to constantly work hard with breaks being far in between. And there are a lot of shady business practices. The companies rarely care about their employees and the society is very indiffrent to your mental safety as a whole.

The U.S. media did a big expose on the prostitutes of Hinodecho being run by the yakuza, and it was right after I'd been there the first time. I regret not getting a hooker because I was just weird about such a thing at the time, but god damn they were hot. Imagine like storage facility where people keep their extra shit, but instead it's just hookers. Every storage room converted into a little bedroom and a whore at every door beckoning you as you walk by. Rows and rows of whores. And then you go over a little bridge and it's just families eating ice cream.
After the international press the local government, which obviously always knew about it, cleaned it all up. But yes that's how Japan do. Their organized crime is very organized.
