Because people have poor taste as a group. Its why focus group stuff appeals to the masses but is mostly garbage.
Seriously, the game was ambitious and full of failure. Clunky mechanics. Mid-level loading at specific points that were also in the middle of areas with regulary active gunfire. Being mid fight and having tonregularly stop and wait for it to reload the area you just left was stupid and frequent. It didnt deserve sequels and, tbh, they were equally good as the first. Thats not a compliment.

Im in my first play through right now. And even tho the reading might be a little tedious at times i get along pretty well. It's surprisingly good in foreshadowing and on building on top of those ideas, hints why i keep on reading.

Its not the amount of text, i just like sneaking into areas and taking guards down more than having a 5min session of reading because i found 3 books and a newspaper on a shelf (nothing against newspapers or emails tho, i love em)

Also the game start to lag severely once i see a light source (lit barrel, neon lights etc etc) i gotta resort to looking at the ground (in hong Kong especially) which is quite annoying
