I am a less-than-wealthy Republican (writing this post from a shitty phone) and can explain why (I am part of the "alt-right" or "alt-lite" or whatever). It's because most people don't think logically and they hold inconsistent beliefs. (For example, they are anti-racist but generalize about whites, they claim to have high levels of empathy but hide late-term abortions under the rug, they want to up the taxes but don't donate, etc.) And because of this, there are some people, people like me, who prefer not to buy their bullshit. This is probably backed by some superiority complex, some feeling that I am smart while the people who hold inconsistent beliefs are stupid; this manifests indirectly as racism against stupid blacks, sexism against lazy women, homophobia against evil gays, and so on.
And in conclusion, it's not that I don't want to make the world a better place, it's just that the Democrats, who claim to want a better society, seem to actually make the world worse not better. And this is why I am voting "against my interest" for Republicans.

Especially talking with people here (which is obviously the dregs, I know), I've heard just the most horrible shit. This sounds like hyperbole, but ideological Republicans are usually against social programs a) because of residual anticommunism from when communism was actually a threat and b) because they correctly view it as a wealth transfer from predominantly white petit-bourgeois people to predominantly brown lumpenproletarians.

The kind of person who would like to see orphans straight up die on the street rather than be taken in by a Christian orphanage is probably a Jew, or a spiritual Jew. I can elaborate on that idea but suffice to say that most Republicans, and most other kinds of rightists (I'm not a Republican or even a conservative), hate those people.

School shootings are tragedies that bespeak a serious societal sickness that needs to be immediately rectified. They are also an infinitesimal portion of all gun deaths, let alone deaths in general. Whoever said that to you was probably expressing frustration with what he perceived to be the crocodile tears of a gun-grabber. One thing I absolutely agree with conservatives on is that guns are good and should be accessible to the public.

You are absolutely correct about that. Because of my politics I would say that conservatism in itself is that way, but the Republican Party apparatus is completely in the pocket of the elite. As is the Democratic Party apparatus.
