Private road owners do not owe you a service. Nor do you owe them money. They had to build and fund that shit by themselves, so if you want to use it, you have to pay.

Pretty sure there is a public bridge in Vancouver that got a toll put on it to pay off something or other (maybe its construction costs?) and once everyone got used to it, the government decided it was a good source of revenue and kept it. That's what I'm saying. But in many cases, that toll revenue goes into the general infrastructure budget, so you're paying the same tax as before the toll, but now if you want to use the road you have to pay per use on top of your yearly taxes.

Public tolls are often used not to ease the tax burden, but as an additional source of income that is gets less backlash than raising taxes by the same amount.

Which still gets used in the transportation budget.

For the individual taxpayer who does not use the road however, their "effective" tax burden is lower.

If you did not make the road a toll-road, you would have levied an additional tax to pay for the road anyways. This doesn't include the reduced infrastructure cost of a less-used road, nor the improvement in traffic on other arteries where those who wish to pay a premium on their transportation are no longer on free roads.

Michigan fag here, we have no toll roads and have the absolute worst roads in america. I've popped 2 tires in the last 6 months, and scraped the bottom of my car countless times. Places with toll roads usually have pretty good roads, so you shouldn't really bitch about it.

Nothing is free. You are not entitled to drive on a private toll road if you haven't paid for the ability to do so.
