I like to think that he knows exactly what he's doing at all times.

He's doing a lot of growing up that he was supposed to do when he was younger now, but was stunted by wealth and fame. I.E. Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus, etc.

He also unironically believes in doing leftist themed performance art, instead of realizing that most individuals say they support something, but never will actually do anything for it. Pretty sad situation he's put himself into all around.

The guys trying to "find" himself, while making a mockery and a jackass out of himself. It's somewhat sad when you realize that it is all borderline mental illness.

But Andy Kaufman was funny. Shia needs help.

Shia LaBeouf feels like his childhood stardom and Transformer fame makes him a joke. He's very insecure about this, and as a result, does a lot of things to try to be "more adult" so people will take him "more seriously." A good example is his facial hair: he refuses to shave it because he wants to look older. Him doing performance art and getting political are just attempts at trying to be taken "more seriously."

His insecurities have also led to anger issues. The guy is prone to blowing up. Just today, it was reported that Shia got kicked out of a bowling alley for yelling at some dude. He's been caught hitting and punching people who "disrespected" him and has even had run ins with the police over this.

Honestly, I thought he was going to get better. The thing where he watched his old movies, although it was pretentious "take me serious" bullshit, did kind of seem like he was trying to come to grips with his past and accept who he was and maybe shrug it off. But I don't know, ever since Trump got elected, Shia has just gotten progressively worse.

Andy Kaufmann is kind of a bad comparison. Kaufmann was anti-comedy and most of his performances were based on absurdism. Shia does public performances with a metamodernist goal; that is, his works are completely self-aware (enough to seem ridiculous or cynical), but have a core of sincerity behind them. The intent behind their work is too different.

In more realistic terms, I have a hard time coming to a decision about the guy. Something like could definitely be true; a lot of the time it seems like he takes himself too seriously and most of his ideas seem half-baked and juvenile at best. On the other hand, that could be the point. The stated goal behind his recent activity has been to expose his own sincerity, so it's possible that's he knows what he's doing, and that's presenting his worst side to world as an experiment in sincerity.

Kaufmann is a bad comparison because him riling up the pre-conditioned masses would be impossible in this day and age - every 'media' outlet (Twitter fb etc) would block or suspend him and no corporate arena would let him come closer than 1000 feet. Lenny Bruce is far more relevant today, they simply banned him outright. No soapbox for gross people in shiny new corporate world. Kaufmann preached when freedom of speech in puritanland was at his peak and Al Gore's wife's ideas were still just blots on plain paper.
