American politics can best be described as Roulette, but can only pick specific numbers. Regardless of what you pick, you always end up with shit.

But the Electoral vote system is like a game of Darts, but you only have to hit anywhere on the board, and the board is 1/4 inch big. the board is one candidate the wall it's on is their rival.

Precisely why 2016 was the worst election in American history. You obviously had to choose the one you thought of as the lesser of two evils (as usual) but the degree to which both were so fucking awful was unprecedented. If only the electoral college were trashed and third parties could have a reasonable shot at winning.

Jefferson, I believe it was, wrote somewhere that in this particular regard the Constitutional Congress fucked up. He saw very early that their system made it such that political parties would arise and that the electing of a president, was very much a race between two parties and could not be otherwise. It's a pretty huge reason why identity politics is the standard in the states. The idea that I need to agree or disagree with someone purely on the basis of the letter after their name is moronic and the biggest problem with both politicians and the public understanding of politics. Us vs. them is easy to understand and unfortunately that's where the debate ends with FAR too many people.
