Alright tech question for those of you who understand the magic porn box.

I'm having a problem with my computer's performance, and when I check it it says the "Disk 0" (My hard drive, I think) can't read and write information quick enough to keep up with what I'm doing. To fix this, do I need to buy a new hard drive or what?

>Inb4 delete system 32
You're not funny, and you need to be 18 to use this site.

Yeah failing hard drive... get a SSD if you are going to replace it btw. Even a conventional disk drive wouldn't.give that sort of error unless it was about to go bang (not literally). Anyways, if you've saved any meaningful information on the drive (porn by the sounds of it) then backup like right now! Get off this site and backup your shit!

>Edit Disk Properties , Get A backup drive(Its the first component to turn off and on) Saves data.
>Another solution is to use a mini pc, another processing unit, and then set it up as a server so that and use IMAP's or I'POPS to make a self-referential Logorith.
> THIRD SOLUTION < > Apply puddy to your keyboard and hands, the keys will be a bitch to try to type and you will slow down

>get a SSD if you are going to replace it
Don't know what an SSD is, mind giving me a quick rundown?

> Even a conventional disk drive wouldn't.give that sort of error unless it was about to go bang
Not actually giving errors, it's just that I play a lot of vidya, and I find it failing frequently with fairly little strain on the RAM and GPU.

>Anyways, if you've saved any meaningful information on the drive (porn by the sounds of it) then backup like right now!
Not porn, like I said it's mostly vidya. Speaking of, I imagine I'll need to migrate my files from this one to the new one, how would I go about doing that?

>use a mini pc, another processing unit, and then set it up as a server so that and use IMAP's or I'POPS to make a self-referential Logorith.
Alright, I'm not well versed in technise, but I'm going to guess that you're telling me I can use another device to actually process the data instead of changing out the hard drive.

My question is, would that slow down what I'm doing?

SSD is a type of hard drive, if you look it up or ask the best buy employee, the term will be understood. SSD stands for Solid State Drive. You back up all your important data onto a CD, second hard drive or flash drive or whatever (so you dont lose your important data), throw out the drive the computer has now and put the new SSD into the computer. Then copy your data onto the SSD.

You also need to put Windows or whatever operating system you have now onto the SSD first. I recommend asking a techie if you really see the computer as a "magic porn box". Just tell the techie that you already have windows on your old hard drive so you shouldnt need to buy windows again.

>>I imagine I'll need to migrate my files from this one to the new one, how would I go about doing that?
Copy your files on your PC that you wanna back up, and paste them over onto a flash drive, external hard drive, CD, etc.. that you plug in or put into your PC you're using now. Do this sooner rather than later because the damage to the drive will only worsen. You dont want it to get so bad that you cant read files anymore.

ask your mom

Alright, may do that. I just fear being tAken advantage of if I go to the computer shop without seeming like I know what I'm talking about, or that they won't know either.

It's kind of like walking into a used car lot without knowing anything about an engine, and then getting a car full of sawdust.

>Do this sooner rather than later because the damage to the drive will only worsen
I don't think it's damaged, I think it's just kinda low quality, but I'll try and invest in a good data storage device.

Computer shop techs are idiots. You'd be better off with an actual professional that could use the repeat business

Anywhere specific you could recommend, or is this a "local private business/contractor" kinda thing?

Local shoos. Theyre fucking everywhere. Avoid geek squad.

Alright, thanks for the advice. Any idea what everything will run me? I got this computer for a hundred bucks when my brother in-law's college decided to upgrade, and I really don't want to put a whole lot of money into this thing.

Depends on whatever is wrong with it. It sounds like a bad drive and a replacement price could vary. If the whole laptop is only worth $100, then maybe you can just replace the PC with a new cheap one instead. The tech should at least be able to give you some options.

Like I said, everything seems to be working fine except the hard drive, which is still working normally - but it can't read or write information fast enough for me to enjoy my vidya.

If it's just the hard drive then I either need to know how to speed it up (Which I don't think I can do, since overclocking doesn't affect that I'm pretty sure) or just find one that can process data faster. Trouble is that I don't know what will and won't fit in this thing, or how to find a good HD.

Install gentoo

If you just need a faster drive, than an SSD is what you want. You don't even need to replace your existing drive if it ain't broke. Get one that's USB and just put your Vidya on that drive.

Cool. I'll look into that.

Thanks for helping me out, I know it's frustrating trying to help someone who has no Godly idea what in the Hell they're doing, and I appreciate your time.

Good luck bro

Does no one defrag their drive any more?

Feel free to tell OP how to do that

What does that mean?
