Avatar 1 was probably the only movie ever made that used 3D the way it should be used, no corner cutting, no "making it 3D in post by parallaxing some bullshit in the shots". The story was super simple, but no one watched it for the plot. I was glued to the seat for the whole ride, and I didn't even notice, because it felt like I was there, in Pandora. Watched the movie a couple more times after that because I knew it would be years before I could have that experience again.

That was some of the most intense suspension of disbelief I've achieved in a movie theater and it was glorious.

I'm sure the numbers will be lower, but I would be surprised if the budget is as high for the sequels. The techniques have already been developed, it's just a matter of reapplying them.

Cameron only wants to do Avatar sequels so he can shoot underwater for the next 10 years, he's basically sucking his own dick and getting the studio to pay for it.
