I was really hard on it as it was airing, but looking back it was just a case of the show being on too long and having poorly thought out plots, mishandled characterization and a reliance on big premises that either didn't fit the show or took too much effort to establish. The show lost its subtlety a long time ago, I wish they had ended it earlier like Glenn Howerton wanted.

Seasons or S12 episodes?
I think Seasons 2-5 were the golden age of Sunny but after Danny Devito joined, Season 1 just felt like one big pilot with an empty void where Frank came in.

Honestly the higher production value of the show is only hurting the overall feel of the show. On my first watch I couldn't wait to get last the first 4 seasons that looked like shit but as time went by it started to look more and more "professional" and now it's not the same anymore. The shitty low budget esthetic fit perfectly with the show's tone
