we stopped using lasers because the nazis invented them. they sacrificed millions of jews to test their lasers and that's why we always hear the myth about nazis gassing and incinerating jews. in reality, they were all lasered.
tl;dr agreeing to not use lasers, just like banning swastikas, is all about forgetting the awful nazi atrocities.

I think it was an omgsodeep design choice. The flames and shells had lots of color too compared to the rest of the palette.
