nintendo didn't expect the game to be so popular
they're very likely going to make changes that will make it a bit more sane (like harder to detect rare pokemon)
Nintendo had little to do with the game aside from licensing out the name. The game itself is virtually a reskin of Ingress, to the point where "hardcore" players run the two games side by side because you can use "energy" spawn points in Ingress to identify exactly where pokemon will spawn in Go.
And basically nothing of value will be lost.

This was my first thought on the matter.
Some ISIS fucks will place lures down in an area, and jump out of vans to start slaying unsuspecting players. They'd be the softest target ever for a suicide bomber.
Time Square is a heightened security zone, especially during an event. There are snipers and spotters all over the area, hundreds of units on the ground.
No such security would ever be in place for a spontaneous gathering. Basically a flash mob of people show up, and get slaughtered.
This is all a plan from the Japs to get revenge for nagasaki and hiroshima. Genius.
