I found out that my Muslim friend confided to a girl he was dating that "those cartoonists kind of had it coming, drawing stuff like that." He was raised in the US.

Muslims, explain to me why showing a picture of Muhammad is so offensive, that people kill over it.
My impressions is that Muhammad, before floating off into heaven, didn't want people to worship him, and instead worship God or Allah, so he forbade pictures or images of his likeness.
However, isn't the act of killing or harming someone who makes a picture of Muhammad, or names a teddy bear Muhammad an act of worship? The person who acts violently over an image of Muhammad is placing Muhammad over that of society and morality, declaring to everyone "I hold this man in such a high regard, I will kill for him". Isn't that fundamentally worshiping him? People kill in the name of God, in Christ, in Yahweh, in Gods and kings and religious leaders and such, because they worship them. How is this any different than Muhammad, who is said to be not a god, or the founder of Islam but just a prophet. Yeah he's the last prophet of Allah but still, just a man.
And if it's offensive to portray Muhammad in cartoons or in stuffed animals because it's an act of worship to Muhammad, and taking away worship from Allah, then why is there no outrage over portrayals over the other Prophets of Islam, like Jesus and Moses and Abraham?

That's a good question. I don't know the answer to it but it might have to do with Jesus and Moses overlapping with Christianity and Judaism and how they view those figures as well.

When if I make a beautiful painting with him in it and doing many peaceful things like caring to babies or plants, and shunning away icons of violence like guns, bombs, tanks ect? Idolatry is also forbidden in the Bible but I'm not sure if there's anything on the visual representation of Jesus. Maybe it's seen in a negative light in the Old Testament? Gonna have to research this.
